Owner description: Víkin – the Reykjavík Maritime MuseumThe Museum is situated in Reykjavik’s picturesque active fishing harbor, only a 10 minute walk from the city center. Enjoy the fantastic view of the boats, fishermen and birdlife before entering the museum. For centuries Icelanders depended heavily on fishing and the sea for survival, and as a result the country has a long and rich maritime history. In the Reykjavik Maritime Museum you can explore this history, including beautiful ship-models, realistic scenery as well as both dried and life fish! The magnificent Coast Guard Vessel Óðinn, who took part in all three cod wars, is a part of the museum, docked outside in the beautiful harbor. Guided tours, please ask at the entrance. A wonderful place for a fun day out with family or friends!

“Great for kids of all ages”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

I like this museum because there is a lot to see and you can have hands on experience with lot of the artifacts. There is a nice cafe on the first floor and it's nice to end your visit with a cup of coffee and kleina (clay-na, a kind of a doughnut).

“Suprisingly interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

We didn't have high hopes for this but went anyway. The exhibits were well done but the highlight was a tour through a retired coast guard cutter. Worth the visit.

“Impressing & surprising maritime history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012 via mobile

We visited this place by coincidence and it was a very good time. The weather was excellent so on top of very good artifacts we could sit out in the cafe with pleasant view over the old harbour.

“Amazing museum with great history of Icelanders”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2012

We had a great time visiting the museum it gave us insight into the history of the
Icelandic nation. We also loved having a launch at the Bryggjan restaurant that is located
in the museum. We sat outside and watched a beautiful view over the hardbour of Reykjavik.

“fun on a boat without having to get on a boat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

This museum seemed like a good way to pass some time while waiting to visit other places. It was quite interesting though, a real history of the boats of Iceland. The museum had a number of model boats and replicated rooms from onboard boats. The cafe inside was a welcome surprise.
