“Lovely hostel, great location, even better staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2013

An excellent hostel in a great location. The highlight for us (a group of 4 staying in a private room) was the staff who went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. It's not the most lively hostel, but its lovely and relaxing and the staff gave us plenty of great suggestions of places to go to eat, drink and party. I would definitely recommend Downtown hostel and would certainly stay there again.

Very good quality hotel, but it won't be my first choice to stay if visiting this city again.

1) I had booked a private room but ended up having to share bathroom facilities with other guests. There is one shower for up to ten potential guests and even though the floor didn't seem to be full, it was always a problem in the morning trying to get into the bathroom. We ended up showering at night which was irritating but saved us the headache in the morning. There are two bathrooms on the floor but only one shower. As well, it took forever for the hot water to reach the top floor -- you'd have to let it run at least five minutes before it got hot. Even then, it never got that warm. Really disappointing in a country like Iceland, which is all about hot water, not to be able to have a good hot shower after coming in from the cold.

2) Stairs. We stayed on the top floor and had to lug everything up four flights of stairs. Not really a huge problem, but a small irritation in a country where you have to pack a lot of warm weather wear.

Everything else about this hostel was great - it was clean and quiet and the staff was fantastic, but honestly, these two details will mean I look at other hotels first.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, be very clear that you need a private bathroom and try not to stay on the top...

Very nice hostel in a great location just west of the main downtown area, near all the restuarants and the harbour. On the other side of the main street is the shopping. Lots of parking available. Room was the biggest we had in Iceland even after staying at two hotels. Same with the bathroom - huge shower. Had a private double room with private bathroom. Excellent excellent value for money in an expensive city. The bed were a little old and they put plastic mattress covers on them which was kind of uncomfortable but you could remove them. Big windows and a nice heater. 5 minutes or less to anywhere you want to go. Nice and quiet.

Also visited Loft, the new HI hostel in more central downtown, which is absolutely gorgeous - go there for a drink on the terrace! They have a nice bar. Definitely stay there if you are younger and dont mind a bit of noise. But both hostels are excellent - if we had known the quality of hostels in Iceland we would hvae stayed at hostels our entire stay and saved a lot of money and not sacrificed on hotel quality.

Room Tip: Double private rooms with bathroom are very nice and big

This is the best hostel I have stayed at. As others have mentioned, the front desk staff are wonderful - friendly, knowledgeable, truly committed to making your stay (and rest of your travels in Iceland) go smoothly. I stayed in both female and co-ed dorms here - they were comfortable, clean, quiet (thank you fellow travellers!). Each bed also has an in-room locker (bring your own lock). Shared bathrooms and showers were also quite clean.

Great guest kitchen facilities - everything you need to make your own meals and save some money. Also, a "free food" box (guests leave extra food they don't want to carry to their next destination) - you could make complete meals out of that too! There is WiFi everywhere - rooms, cafe, kitchen. Also laundry facility in the kitchen area - rate to use it is the same I've paid in Reykjavik laundromat, and includes soap. Great experience, I've already booked again for my next night in the city.

Room Tip: Buy an Hosteller's International membership to get a better rate (worth it if you will spend 3-4...

Warm, friendly , knowledgable staff. After we had an awful experience with a car hire vs a sand storm, my sister and I had pretty much had enough of iceland.

The greeting at reception, to the excellent room and wifi everywhere, we left with a very positive experience. We stayed in a twin room with a shared bathroom on the top floor. This was perfect, as there was only 4-5 other double rooms sharing the two bathrooms/ toilets. We never had any troubled with needing the bathroom. There was also a small kitchen which made reheating food or a tea/ coffee easy.

The only grip was the pillows. Quite flat.

Room Tip: There is no pool.

This was my first experience in a hostel. My sister and I booked a private room with our own bathroom. Very simple, clean, and an overall excellent value for expensive Reykjavik. It's quiet at night (for a hostel) and the staff are very helpful. They booked all of our tours, gave us directions and recommendations, etc. The breakfast is the same everyday, but I really enjoyed it. Very healthy and tasty (yogurt, fresh fruit and veggies, bagels, whole grain toast and jam, fresh coffee.) The beds are comfortable and warm, the tap water is fresh to drink and the showers are hot. You can walk to downtown and the marina with no problem. I also like that it's a green hostel.

Room Tip: I could hear some partying travelers in the dorms late one night, so if you aren't into that, pa...

If you've looked into it at all, you already know that Iceland is INCREDIBLY expensive. Nonetheless, the country is absolutely magical in that around every corner there is something amazing to be seen or experienced. It really is a must-see country in my opinion. It was because of this breathtaking beauty that my husband and I decided to take a road-trip around Iceland and our first stop was Reykjavik. In order to keep our costs down we decided to hostel it where possible and the HI Downtown Hostel was our first stop.

We had one of the double rooms with private bathroom and it was great. It was impeccably clean and was a great first stop for us on our epic adventure around the country. They offer a decent breakfast spread for additional money, and will let you store your luggage at the front desk while you await check-in if needed. The staff also are willing to talk to you about options in the area for food or entertainment. I would recommend either securing your HI membership beforehand (can take a bit of time so be mindful of that) or purchasing it on-site--it saved us quite a bit of money in the long run around the country.

Moreover, they were incredible in helping me track down a very important item that I had left in the room and would have been devastated if they had not found it. I will forever be grateful!
