We arrived at the harbour by mini bus some 5 minues from our hotel. However, because the guides had seen Humpback whales for the last three days then they decided to get the best chance of whale viiewing they would bus us 50 minutes away by coach to another harbour and boat for better opportunity. The sea time would be the same but it would be impossible to get to the same 'watching' ground in the same time via boat. Once there we boarded and were offered either immediately or at any future time during the tour, use of survival suits that would be weatherproof etc. Also sick tablets were avaliable free from the bar area should there be need. The boat was three decks with one of these inside that many avaliled themselves too for warmth or because they felt sea sick but there were two upper decks open to the weather and obviously with better all round views. We were fortunate as in my opinion the weather although cold was not rough or raining/snowing and for much of the journey the sea appeared calm, although I appreciate that some may not have found it such. During the latter part of the forward journey we were able to see if we were lucky four porpoises but it appeared that the humpbacks had moved location. Just as we were about to turn back we were met with a cry from the bridge that one of the guides had spotted a whale some 400 mtrs away. Everyone rushed to the side and it was a wonder we never lent right over but all waited with baited breath as it had dived below the surface. At last we saw the top fin break the surface and then watched for about 30 minutes, a 'MINKY' whale rising, swimming and diving at various distances. At one time it was close enough to hear it blowing and I have to admit this was such a surreal sound to hear having only seen whales normally in a sea park or on TV. This was apparently the first Minkey of the season and it was early and so this seemed to cause some excitement. The pressure off, everyone (Those standing) seemed to enjoy the jouney back to the port and you could even treat yourself to a hot drink or something stronger with snacks on the lower deck if you wanted to. After disembarking, it was back onto the coach that returned us to the original harbour. This company could have taken us out from where booked but went that bit extra in trying to ensure we had as much chance of seeing a whale as we could. A great company to go with.
