“Nice service, cramped conditions”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013 via mobile

This was our least favorite place during our trip. The owners were helpful, the rooms were clean, the location was good, but it was a full house and obtaining access to one of the two bathrooms was a headache. The upstairs bathroom door didn't close correctly, but when we locked it, the key jammed and we were locked in! We had to slide the key under the door so our spouse could unlock it from the outside. Judging from the noise earlier in the evening, another visitor had the same experience. It was just too much hassle for the price.

At first sight, Bakki was just a normal charming house in Höfn. But as we found out later, it was a place that one would grow to love.

We arrived rather late in Höfn after a long drive from Reykjavik. Lara, the hostess was there to greet us. As Höfn was not a very big town, it was fairly easy to locate the guesthouse. The picture on the website was very accurate -- the guesthouse was really at the edge of a corner by the coast, with amazing view of the glaciers across the bay. It was possible to watch sunrise and sunset just by standing around the guesthouse.

Our room was basic but very clean. The shared bathroom was clean and quite adequate even though there was a rather full house while we were there. And if the bathrooms were full, a free trip to the local swimming pool (for the truly Icelandic experience) was provided. The other guests were all very considerate and so it was very quiet even with all the people in that house (probably we all saw the note on the wall about the thin walls). As we were a party of four, we got the family room, with windows facing the glaciers. The common area downstairs was nicely decorated, and the kitchen was stocked with different kinds of tealeaves, which was great for late night sunset watching.

But perhaps the best of the place was the atmosphere, which was particularly evident during breakfast time. Our hostess, Lara prepared us a feast of locally produced food every morning, with eggs made to order. We chatted with her as well as other guests in the house. During our short stay in the guesthouse, Lara shared with us her passion for the environment and nature. Through her, we learned how to appreciate the environment and nature around there. It was hard not to fall in love with the place upon experiencing the peace and harmony there.

Do not forget to take time walking along the coast while there. It was simply lovely.

After reading the reviews of this guesthouse on trip advisor and looking at the stunning pictures....we reserved a room. We highly anticipated our stay there. The home is indeed quite visually attractive, although...it is quite a small house with 4 small bedrooms...3 of which hold 2 people and a family room that can hold 4-5 people. None of the bedrooms have wash basens. The night that we stayed...there was a full house plus the cook who would be cooking everybody's breakfast, according to the owner, who lives elsewhere. There are two bathrooms...a large bathroom on the first floor and a very small one on the second floor. The stairway between the bathrooms is rather steep...especially to be trying to use at night as all the bedrooms are on the second floor. However, even with 11-12 people for 2 bathrooms, this could still be OK, if everyone was courteous in their bathroom use. Unfortunately, the night that we were there, this was not the case....people had left the bathroom floors covered with water after their showers and towels laying all over the floor and sink. They also left their personal toothbrushes, paste etc on the sinks, making it difficult to find any space for your own use. But, what exasperated us most, was when we had to wait to use the bathroom while one woman washed a large bag of rocks in the sink....
Now, you may say...if you thought this a problem....why didn't you stay at a hotel with a private bathroom....and you would be correct. Also, I'm not quite sure how management could prevent this from occurring again. But, if there is a full house, this problem could occur again...so beware. In addition, the bedroom walls do not offer much isolation of conversation in adjacent rooms as you could hear way too much.
However, the breakfast was quite good and we did enjoy talking to the woman who made us our breakfast. So...would we stay here again, even with the good breakfast.....unfortunately not!

This is by far the best guesthouse I have stayed on all my travels.

The guesthouse stands beautifully on a quiet street overlooking a lake and mountains. Even the bathroom offers the same view!

Walls are plastered with beautiful pictures taken by the owner who is a renowned photographer. In fact, the guesthouse feels almost like a gallery!

Heated rooms are well-furnished, clean and very cosy. I really enjoyed the comfortable bed.

Breakfast spread was fantastic and I truly enjoyed my mornings chatting with other guests in the kitchen.

Although I did not catch the Northern Lights here, but I am aware that there are frequent sightings from the hotel, which is great if you prefer not to drive out on cold winter nights.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and will definitely return to this guesthouse when I next visit Höfn‎.

When we arrived, the front door was open, but nobody was home. We had to call the owner to come and save us from our plight. While she was on her way, we explored the house, which was clean, spacious, and had pretty photographs put up around the house. The kitchen is big and well-stocked, and there were 2 bathrooms allocated for 3 rooms, with shower and soap provided!

The room was quite old-school, but it was warm and homely. Breakfast is also provided, with an ample selection of cheeses, hams, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other food. On top of that, the owner's son also whipped up some scrambled eggs for us to eat. This was the only place we stayed at in Iceland with such wonderful service, and it was really appreciated.

Could not have been better. Warm comfortable room, amazing views, Soffia very helpful, delicious breakfast. A perfect little town on the edge of nowhere- and they can cook! Iceland is a revelation. Would also recommend Glacier Walks who ( despite the name) offer tours on a Jeep up to the glacier then skidoos! Despite initial trepidation this was fantastic. What a country!

Despite feeling like we were encroaching on someone's personal space, at 9pm we were given an extremely warm and hospitable welcome from the owners son. We were shown to our room, which was more than adequate, except for the missing key, due to previous guests taking it. however this really was not a problem as we felt very safe. Due to our late arrival there were no dining options available in Hofn, and after discovering this, the owners son offered us all of the contents of the fridge except a can of coke, which was exceptionally good hospitality, above and beyond the call of duty. Breakfast had a great selection, but the most outstanding point was that you could have your eggs and bacon cooked to order. This was the only place we stayed that did this in Iceland.
