“Nice on the first lock but stained on the secound look”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2011

To start with the positive things; the guesthouse is in a good location, close to the N1.

On the arrival we had to get our room key at the new museum which is located close to the guesthouse and the staff were friendly to us. We received a voucher for 1 hour free internet but if you want to use the internet longer you propably have to pay.

The room was very spacious and we had a great view over the ocean.
But unfortunately the room wasn't cleaned properly. There was a big spider on the window which must have been there for a longer period of time as the spiderweb was huge and covering 1/3 of the window.

There is a big kitchen for the guests but this wasn't cleaned properly as well. When opening the drawers there was dirt stuck to the drawers and it did look a bit filthy. The same applies to the fridge snd the kettle. Unfortunately there was no washing up liquit and therefore we had to improvise when we wanted to clean our dishes.

Besides the kitchen there is a big and nice sitting area with a big TV. We could watch a large variety of TV channels (icelandic and english). There were also magazines and books available which was nice.

The bathroom was a bit dated and when we took a shower the sink in the bathtub was blocked and the water didn't drain. Were standing in a little lake of dirty water which is not nice after a bussy day. The wall cover in the bathroom was loose and water could get behind it which explained the uneaven floor in the bathroom.

The guesthouse does have a lot of potential but it needs some repairs and renovations. It all makes a dated impression.

We stayed at Guesthouse Hali with three adults and a young baby. The guesthouse is located on a working farm and is spread out every several buildings. The main building is the restaurant and a museum, where "reception" is located (the same people who serve dinner and run the museum also run the guesthouse). There are several other buildings that contain various types of rooms, and as far as I can tell, everything has shared facilities.

Our particular building had six units, a fully stocked kitchen, and two bathrooms. The rooms were impeccably clean, but I do have to say that they were rather small. Part of this might have had to do with the fact that we had a "triple room" that had two beds and a bunk bed, along with a baby cot (the room next door was a double and seemed considerably more spacious). This wasn't a huge problem since we mainly just were there to spend the night.

The restaurant offered a very satisfying dinner buffet for about $35 US (yes that's expensive, but not by Icelandic standards, and especially not in this area). The buffet included lamb stew, arctic char marinated with honey and other sauces, freshly baked bread, lamb straight from the farm, au gratin potatoes, and dessert (chocolate cake, rhubarb with ice cream). It was very filing and seemed like the type of food that Icelandic people would typically eat (as opposed to the crazy rotted shark "hukarl" that you read about in the guidebooks).

Location was fantastic, as it was a short 10-15 minute drive to Jokulsarlon, one of my favorite places in all of Iceland. Best of all, the place wasn't particularly expensive; we ended up paying about $130 for our room, which is good for this region of Iceland.

If you're interested in staying in a good-value place near Jokulsarlon and you don't mind shared facilities, then this guesthouse might be for you. The website is particularly bad about showing pictures so I've included a bunch in this review to give people a better sense.

i stayed at the hali guesthouse for one night during my weeklong trip to iceland. i had pre-booked the room knowing that i didn't want to go all the way to hofn to spend the night, and i wanted to be near jokulsarlon. this place is definitely convenient, although there is nothing else in the "town" of hali other than the guesthouse and restaurant, all owned by the same folks.

the guesthouse is comfortable enough ( relatively spacious single room with shared bathroom) but cost over 10,500 ikr per night which was actually double the cost of the place i had stayed just two nights before. there was no option of eating anywhere else in hali, and yes, dinner was tasty but it was 4200ikr which was probably the combined cost of all of my food for the previous 3 days. it was a buffet and i stuffed myself silly to make me feel like it was worth it.

i was a bit shocked that they didn't even offer free wifi, even though i spent over 14,000 ikr there. they wanted 600ikr per hour, even thoughi had brought along my own computer.

so, if you really want to stay near the lagoon, go for it. otherwise just be aware of the costs.

This farm was an excellent place to stay on a round trip in the South of Iceland. No luxury, but clean, correct rooms, nothing to complain about. Breakfast was fine. I would especially recommend dining at the farm, great buffet, tasty food and definitely a good deal. Unfortunately no free wifi.

A useful location, not far from the Glacial lagoon, and about an hour from the Skaftafell visitors centre. Our Category 2 accommodation was in a separate cabin right down by the sea-shore in a pleasant garden. 6 rooms shared two bathrooms and one good kitchen (4 hobs and an oven) and living room. Internet access was free for residents, but only available while sat in the cafe/museum where breakfast and meals were served. Our room was light, clean and spacious. We had easily the best breakfast we had in Iceland, with warm fresh bread and a good selection of other food.

We, a party of seven including children, stayed overnight with the intention of visiting the nearby Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon and doing the boat trip the next day. We booked for dinner, bed and breakfast and were glad that we did. The dinner was excellent, with fresh produce from the farm including the lamb and the fish.
We stayed in one of the houses near the sea, with magnificent views of the glacier one way and the Atlantic Ocean the other/ Although it did not look remarkable from the outside, the inside revealed spotlessly clean bedrooms, comfortable beds, warm and cosy. There was a combined lounge kitchen area with all we needed, again very comfortable and a more than adequate dining area. We shared these facilities with some other travellers at a reasonable cost.
Next morning we had a problem with the hot water service, which seemed inadequate for the number of people it was meant to supply, but some of us were able to use the showers in another house. I believe this will be updated in the future.
The breakfast, in the restaurant, was the usual Icelandic breakfast and plenty to fill us prior to our morning on the glacier. If you intend to visit the glacier, then this is an ideal place to stay, with warm friendly hosts and excellent facilities amongst some of the most stunning scenery.
