“Great spot in a very cool little town!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

My husband and I stayed at the Iceland Air Hotel in Akureyri as part of an Iceland Air package to see the Northern Lights this past Thanksgiving and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel itself is very well kept, modern and clean. It was extremely similar to the Natura hotel we stayed at in Reykjavik although had a more rustic touch which was appropriate for the area (more wooden fixtures and a warmer feel). The front desk well-staffed for check-in and were always very helpful in answering questions, giving directions and offering suggestions for restaurants. We had a room on the lower level despite a big push to upgrade it was very large and comfortable – twin beds pushed together in the Euro style to make a queen sized bed but extremely cozy beds and nice linens. We had a wheelchair access room so our bathroom was very large and had no curtain which was not awesome since the floor would get soaking wet after a shower, but the space was nice. The hotel is a short walk down a very large hill to the “downtown” area where all the restaurants and bars are, so it was ultra-convenient. The restaurant for breakfast was decent, although for the price per person if not included in your hotel rate would be rather steep. The room was very quiet and we did enjoy peaceful sleep while we were there. The hotel bar was small but they offer nightly drink specials and we enjoyed the staff at the bar. We felt the value and comfort were very well kept at this location, we enjoyed our stay and would totally come back here.

Exellent hotel for wheel chair users. only problem is low wc but rails either side so only slight issue. Hotel only does snack menu . Portions are small so for dinner recommend you go into town.
The hotel is at the top of a 1200 yard steep hill, the restaurants are are at the bottom. you need to be fit to push the chair & this is difficult in snow & ice so taxi is preferable. Most shops & restaurants have steps but there are some (not many) with ramps

We had a lovely 4 night stay in this hotel as part of our Icelandair package. The hotel is very modern and clean, comfortable bright rooms, with everything you need. Lounge/bar area is very warm and welcoming, nice comfy sofas. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is up a steep hill, but there are alternative routes via less steep inclines to get into/out of town (you are given a map), and local buses stop just outside the hotel and are free. We got a free voucher to the swimming pool opposite, which was brilliant (has steam room, 4 hot pools, and two 25m pools and a children's pool). Food in the bar was great, and breakfast was excellent too (especially the waffles). We would definitely stay here again and recommend to others.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet, only top floor rooms have good views and are available to upgrade to.

This hotel was part of our package tour to Iceland, through IcelandAir. Really good connection from Reykjavik's city airport to Akureyri.
The hotel is at the top of the hill, a reasonable walk to the downtown area. Even though there was snow on the ground, walking wasn't that difficult - no worse than home at the same time of year! Travelled with my husband and brother-in-law, so we had 2 rooms. Our room was very comfortable, large bed, comfy duvets, really efficient heating and gorgeous bathroom with a walk-in shower. We had a view of the park behind the hotel, so it was very quiet. The other room looked over to the public pools, but was still very quiet. The bathroom layout in the other room was different, but still worked well.
Breakfasts were included in our package and they were very complete - cereals, eggs, fruit - really everything you would want - including Skyr!
Reception and the bar share the same large space - very comfortable and welcoming. The staff was really great!
As for Internet access - there is no free access in the rooms, but the big Mac in the foyer was always available. And face it, I didn't go on vacation to be glued to a computer!

The other reviewers portray the place pretty accurately: it's cozy, clean, comfortable, and very European in its use of space. The staff are knowledgeable about both the hotel and the town, and seem very committed to making sure things go well.

We loved the breakfast buffet, which is a nice combination of the kinds of things American expect, along with those that locals enjoy. No, it's not the eggs-and-bacon breakfast you'd get back home -- but isn't experiencing that kind of difference why we travel in the first place?

We also got the top-floor upgrade, and can recommend it. Especially when we went -- early December -- the big windows and spacious views of the fjord helped us feel like we were getting the most out of the very short days.

Room Tip: Take the top-floor upgrade if it's offered and you can afford it. It's a little extra bit of...

This hotel was booked as part of Icelandair tour. The hotel was quite nice; room nicely furnished and bright. There is a small bar in the lobby which was good, as there were no other bars or restaurants real close.
The breakfasts at the hotel were fair. The only eggs for 3 days were hardboiled eggs cut in half and sliced. There was a waffle maker which was ok. No syrup.

This is a very nice, modern, clean hotel with nice views over the very attractive town. The staff were friendly and helpful, the lobby warm and inviting. The happy hour was nice, but at 4-6 p.m. a little bit early. The rooms are a bit small though well designed, though, as others have mentioned, the toilet and shower area are rather oddly located and not at all private. It was irritating that there was no free WiFi in the rooms - though there is in the lobby (it seems the more expensive a hotel the more they want to gouge you with this sort of unfair fee). It is a bit of a steep hike into town, which we didn't much like with some snow and ice on the ground. We never did discover the bus. We had two tours with Saga Travel - Lake Myvatn and Northern Lights - and cannot praise them highly enough. A very professional outfit.
