We stayed two nights at the Icelandair Hotel Akureyri in a first floor room (i.e., the same level as reception). Our room was very quiet and, although facing a sometimes busy street (for Akureyri) with a swimming pool across that street, we heard little noise from either outside the hotel or along the corridor inside.
We had twin accommodation and both beds were very comfortable. The room, itself, was fairly large, with lots of shelf and closet space, and nicely decorated in what we think of as “Nordic design”. It was also spotless. Other reviewers have remarked upon the odd arrangement of the bathroom – the toilet and sink on one side the beds (with an opaque sliding glass door) and the shower on the other side of the beds around the corner in a sort of alcove. It does work. However, one of the few downsides of the hotel, and perhaps a personal pet peeve, was the shower curtain for the shower. There was lovely water pressure, which caused the shower curtain to billow into the shower and, if you were not careful where you stood, repeatedly brush against you. From a hygienic point of view, in an otherwise very, very clean environment, this was a bit of an annoyance.
The breakfast buffet was the best we encountered on our trip. There was a wide variety of items that would satisfy both the North American and European traveler. Just as a tip, if you can avoid eating breakfast before 8:00 AM, you may find it less hectic. On the first morning we were there, the dining room was full of people, ourselves included, eating early to catch tours to various places. On the second morning, a bit later, there were far fewer people. I did note, on the second morning, that staff was busy replenishing supplies at the various buffet stations; so, they do keep an eye on it to ensure that everyone has a good breakfast.
The location of the hotel is up a hill and a bit out of the town centre. I found the climb to be somewhat strenuous. Others may not. However, the accommodation did add to our stay in beautiful surroundings.
