We checked in to this newly opened Icelandair Hotel in Akureyri. Normally a hotel can be expected to have a few problems when it's only days old - - but not this property. My family stayed here for 3 nights and found the hotel to be splendid.
Where to begin? The staff is friendly and courteous. The lobby is furnished in a stylish and comfy manner. It's a wonderful place to enjoy a cup of coffee and some reading at the beginning of the day. And equally attractive for a glass of wine at the end of the day.
The rooms are spotlessly clean and modern in appearance. There is plenty of room and abundant space for suitcases and clothing with built in cabinets. The single beds are oh-so-comfy with two pillows and duvets. They can be pushed together. Windows are huge and offer views of surrounding snow capped mountains. Yes, even in June. But thick blackout curtains keep out most of the light at night. The shower is wonderful. There is a flat panel large screen television in the room. I suspect more channels will be added as time goes on. High quality fixtures and finishes are installed throughout. The rooms were very quiet. My family had adjoining rooms (with a pass door) and everyone slept very soundly. Heat is instantly available from the radiator or open the window for cool Icelandic air.
Now on to dinner. There is no need to go out for dining. We ate in the restaurant 3 nights in a row. My family consists of 2 adults and 3 kids age 11, 15 and 15. It's true, after 3 nights someone had ordered every entree on the menu. By the third night we were ordering repeats because we wanted to enjoy an entree just one more time. Oh, the lamb with mushroom sauce! Lighter eaters might skip the appetizer course as the entree was plenty filling for us. On the last night we asked Chef Halli to come out and introduce himself -- he got an applause from the family.
Breakfast was very filling, fresh, and tasty. There was fresh fruit, breads, boiled eggs, self-service waffles, cheeses, and a large array of cereal and toppings. The dining room is on the lower level. Outdoor furniture and a fire place was being installed during our stay. We never felt rushed and the setting was very pleasant and the service was friendly and efficient.
And so there you have the first review of the Icelandair Hotel Akureyri. Don't hesitate to stay at this property . . . and enjoy your stay in Akureyri - - the Sorensen from Shorewood, Wisconsin, USA certainly did.
Not all rooms offer connecting doors.
