“Dettifoss & Nature Baths”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

Jón is awesome. Somewhere between jolly and a goofball, he comes across as a man who very much enjoys his job. I almost didn't get to go on this tour as it requires a minimum of two people and I was traveling alone an no one else had booked it yet. I had very much wanted to see the Goðafoss and Dettifoss and was crestfallen that I would now have to pick a different tour that only covered one. But right after we had hung up the phone (I booked it through the Hof Cultural/information Center) someone else contacted Jón wanting to take the tour and he immediately called us back and made it possible. What we got was a very intimate and private tour as Jón took us around the Goðafoss, Lake Myvatn, Dimmuborgir, Dettifoss, steam vents and mud pots, and ending at the Myvatn Nature Baths. All the while cracking silly jokes about the landscape and history of the area. I enjoyed talking wiith him about a variety of subjects from Norse mythology and local folk tales to Game of Thrones and the finer points of being a tour guide. All the stops along the way were very impressive and a soak in the Nature Baths was the perfect way to end the tour. If you're in Akureyri for even a day I recommend spending it with The Traveling Viking.

“Fantastic-A Must Do”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

We had one of the best sightseeing trips ever with the Traveling Viking. Jon, the owner, was fantastic to work with. Jon responded promptly to all our questions and offered suggestions to make our trip unforgettable
We headed up to Akureyri to search for the Northern Lights and on our 4th night had a terrific show. We toured with Jon for 4 days and he is exceptional. His knowledge of the area and willingness to work with us was exceptional. Jon put together a trip which maximized what we were able to see, offered suggestions on restaurants and shopping too.
I have travelled the world and have never had better service, a more knowledgeable guide, and someone who was fas flexible to change our program as required by the conditions in the area. Five stars plus.

“Myvatn-Dettifoss: A Must-Do Tour!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

Our tour was phenomenal and a true highlight of what was already a magnificant trip. The tour was scheduled for eight hours, but really lasted nearly ten because Jon was so incredibly accommodating. He picked us up at the airport and then drove us to our hotel so we could check in and drop off our luggage before heading out for the day. He also added a stop to see some of the boiling mud pits that my husband had expressed interest in.
The tour included Godafoss, Lake Myvatn, Dettifoss, the boiling mudpits, and a dip in geothermal baths. We had ample time to enjoy each stop and never felt rushed. We also had lunch at a small out-of-the-way restaurant that had absolutely delicious food. Throughout the day, Jon offered interesting and vivid descriptions of the sights we visited. He was incredibly kind and engaging. There were four people in our party and an additional two travelers, and we all fit comfortably in the Super Jeep. Traveling by Super Jeep not only allowed us to travel through some roads that were closed due to snow, but to tow out some other travelers who had unwisely decided to try navigating the roads by rental car. Through it all, Jon was graciously willing to help those who were stranded.
I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Iceland. Consider staying in the area for an extra day or so - Akureyri is a very cute city and I hear The Traveling Viking has other tours int he area as well.

After picking me up at the airport, we started our daytour with only one other guest.
It was absolutely amazing! Jon is a very friendly and competent guy and you'll notice that he loves what hes doing.
First we got to Godafoss, a very beautiful waterfall that was partly covered with ice at that time.. then we drove to lake Myvatn and stopped there at different places and had lunch. Afterwards we headed to Sullfoss and Dettifoss, although all the streets were covered with sooo much snow. But finally we made it and it was an unforgettable experience! On the way back to Akureyri we stopped at an area with hot steam and slumpots (Namafjall Hverir) and our last station was the Nature Bath, but unfortunately I had no things for swimming with me.

All in all it was a fantastic day, the tour took 8-9 hours and we've seen even more things than these that were listed in the tourdiscription. Thanks, Jon!

“A knowledgeable, friendly, personal, and expert Northern Lights hunter.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013 via mobile

When we arrived in Akureyri we had a good forecast for the Northern Lights and wanted to book a small personal tour for our honeymoon. Jon from The Travelling Viking collected us in a Jeep to ourselves and talked us through the phenomena on our way to a nearby viewing site he keeps to himself.

Here alone we caught just a few glimmers and were losing hope of seeing a full display. We had the real benefit of using a small operator here - patience. Rather than rushing around with a coach of eager tourists, Jon's expertise in locating the start of the lights and sticking to a position led to an incredible show just to ourselves across the valleys and even directly overhead.

As Jon says you can never guarantee seeing the lights, but if you book with this operator and bring patience and warm clothing, and a little luck, you will have the most personal and unforgettable experience of your life. Thanks Jon!
