I should preface this by saying for many years the North part of Cyprus was pretty much cut off from the south, there was no government money, lilttle tourism and visitors just had to take what they could get. So it helps to understand that N.Cyprus is around 20-30 years behind its swisher neighbours in the southern part of the island. There is heat, there is dust, sometimes the drains don't work as you would expect in northern Europe and there are big scary insects around.
I would recommend Bare Hill Holiday Village if you're looking for a low-budget option and you're not the sort of person who goes around checking for dust with a white glove. For around £200 a week you get a room, hot water, cooking facilities, nice gardens, lovely pool and a great location. While I think the owner could really up his game in the cleaning stakes, it's probably par for the course in this part of Cyprus where the philosopy is you get what you get and you don't get upset.
I enjoyed my stay here-they have villa type rooms that can sleep a family of 4 or 5 quite comfortably and studio type rooms for smaller groups. You get a balcony and cooking facilities or you can chose to eat at the restaurant which serves up decent home cooking. It's great for kids who can wander around fairly safely or play in the pool which has a kids section. There was a really nice mix of people there when we went - young-old-families-Turks-Brits all got on and all friendly.
There's no charge for air con which all the rooms have and there's hot water-it's solar so it has its limitations and although I can't quibble with some of the posts here the owners worked hard to keep the place in good order and did listen when we asked for various things. They can help sort out car hire and taxis to and from the airport-all of which can be minor headaches in some parts of the world.
The location is good-the setting against the besparmak mountain range is superb-supermarkets and shops are close by as are a couple of good beaches with changing/showering facilities and kayaks etc for hire You do have to pay to use the beaches but this is general now in N.Cyprus and there are free beaches further afield if you don't mind travelling a bit further. The minibus into town stops right outside the entrance and will whisky you into Kyrenia in minutes which is a bonus.
Despite some of the critics, the place does get busy so it can't all be bad and if you want to come during the busy time, then it's probably worth booking in advance.
