“Good enough - clean, fairly cheap but nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2011

Sokos is the local chain of hotels in Finland and they are in general nothing special but usually fairly affordable, clean but often a bit old. The Seurahuone is one of the Sokos hotels in Turku and I decided to try it due to the relatively low price (around €70 including breakfast) and its good location.

It is in the city centre, a few minutes walk from the main square (where for example the airport buses stop) and a few blocks from the river. The location is central yet rather calm. If arriving by train it is a bit of a longer walk but still possible (except for perhaps in winter time).

Check-in was smooth and efficient but what surprised me was the friendly service (I often find the service in Finland efficient but seldom friendly) so a plus for the service. When I got up to the room it was fairly basic but rather big. It had most of the things that I would want such as TV (old style but functioning, mini-bar and iron). Would have been nice to have some coffee/tea making facilities in the room.

The bed was rather narrow but I did still sleep well. The furniture was definitely worn but still functioning and it did not feel dirty or so. The desk was good enough to work at and the free wifi worked well. Bathroom was also good enough with a bathtub. A bit cheap with shower gel and shampoo provided only in big bottles but they did provide lingonberry bath oil.

The hotel also had a business center where it was possible to also print for free. A decent gym and a sauna (of course) was also available. The breakfast is often a sorry chapter in Finnish hotels and the breakfast at Seurahuone is not great but it is a lot better than the one at Scandic Plaza (where I have stayed in the past). There is a decent selection of both hot and cold food and the quality is at least not awful.

Looking at the price I would consider staying here also next time in Turku.

Our family 2+2 stayed only one night, as part of a Moomin valley package. The hotel is central, and the standard was very satisfactory with good service and a large room. Our only complaint is that the windows are very poorly protected from children, when we arrived the windows could be opened with a push and the room was on 5th floor. It was possible to secure the windows better, which we did, but a childrens lock would do much to help families feel safer with small children in the room. Breakfast was not great, but OK, and there is a small area for (small) children to play just next to the breakfast/restaurant. We're happy with the hotel and would stay again.

Our room was big and clean. The bed was comfortable, bathroom was also very big (with a big bath!). We were quite happy with what we got. The location of the hotel was perfect! Right in the middle of the city but off the main bar-streets.
Breakfast was average Finnish standard, enought of everything.
No free parking. =(

The hotel would need a renovation. Our room (superior single room, suitable also for 2 persons) was spacious, but the bed was too soft. The biggest problem was that there was no air-conditioning and the windows could not be opened because of the noise from the street. The breakfast was very basic, nothing special. We left after one night although had booked for 2.

I stayed at the Sokos Hotel Seurahuone for one night. Booked the room via the Sokos Hotels' website, and got a price of 65 euros (including breakfast).

As others have pointed out, the hotel is located in the city centre, and is within walking distance from the train station.

The hotel could benefit from a slight renovation, but is not too worn down. The room was clean, beds comfortable and came with two different pillows -- one small and firm, and one large and soft.

Breakfast was good, included eggs, sausages, bread, yogurt, fruit etc.

The staff was very friendly and seemed to be multi-lingual.

I would stay at the hotel again.

A comfortable hotel, even though the decor was a bit old and the bathroom was not that great even though it was clean. The street outside was a bit noisy during the weekend nights. Breakfast was good.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2010

We stayed here in June 2010. We were staying at the Omena Hotel with my boyfriend for a night and decided to change as we noticed through their website, that the "high season" price was almost the same (Omenahotel doesn't have a parking, and parking in the streets and car parks is expensive). Also we wanted to have a room with windows that could be opened. I got a reduction with S- card, don't know how much, but we paid 86e per night for a double non-smoking standard room.
Parking wasn't free but in a car park nearby at a special price (9€ / 24 hours).
The car park was almost full but we found a place.
Room was very nice, especially the bed, but the furniture was worn out and looked like even clean it would look a bit dirty and old, like the doors, the walls in the entrance or the sides of the bed. The room was big compared to rooms in central europe. I asked for a double bed with a bath and they gave us what I asked for. The room was comfortable, windows could be opened, there was a safe box, a fridge, hair drier, fast wifi connection and all. There was also a bed for a baby... The hotel looked actually very child friendly with a game room, microwave in their restaurant, children running around, a swimming pool in their other hotel nearby to be used for free etc. During the evening there was noise from the room above with excited children screaming but not anymore after midnight.
At the reception desk, the staff was happy to use their language skills and during the breakfast the waitresses were very friendly and smiling kindly.
I would recommend this hotel especially for people with kids and also, I think it was a good value for money. Not a design or classy hotel, but warm, nice and comfortable at a reasonable price.
