I think everything about this hotel was a pleasant surprise, and I have no hesitation in awarding it top marks. The location could not be better in Turku, especially for anyone taking a Silja or Viking Line Ferry, there is an excellent welcome from the staff, the rooms are very tastefully laid out given the constraints of the building, and the breakfast will keep you going on a long voyage. The hotel has been tastefully laid out within a conversion of one of the original buildings in the port, and thus has particular charm.
The rooms are well lit, a good size, and clean, and although the bathroom is rather small, it could not be described as cramped. The free internet access was excellent - especially useful given the selection of TV channels was limited as they tried to sell premium services.
This was my second visit to Turku, so I was already aware that the Town Centre has little to offer, but the main attraction of the castle and the harbourside walk are adjacent to the hotel. An added benefit to travellers is that the hotel is also easily reached from the airport, with Bus Number 1 starting at the airport, and going via the Town Centre to the Harbour. There are two stops in the main harbour, and both are convenient for the hotel – which is a long thin building going from the Viking terminal to the Silja Terminal. If you get off at the penultimate stop – the Viking Terminal you will be dropped literally outside the door to the hotel. To do this if you can’t follow the stop names indicated on the bus you just wait until the bus turns left after passing the castle – and pressing the bell then will mean the bus will stop at the Viking Terminal shortly after turning right as it passes the end of the hotel (a red brick building).
The whole area around the hotel is pleasant enough, without any of the detractions you sometimes get in port areas. You can watch the huge ferries arrive or depart during the evening – or do similar in the morning.
There is a train station within a few metres of the hotel, but this is only used by trains that link up with the ferry times, so you’d need to check if these were an option – otherwise air travellers can get to / from the airport on bus number 1 for less than 3 Euros, and those that really want to see what is in the town centre can use the same bus for a similar fare.
The harbour area also has various museums and ships that can be visited – but at a price.
All in all my stay at the Best Western Seaport was an ideal stay for so many reasons.
