“Best Western at its best - and in an Ideal location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2011

I think everything about this hotel was a pleasant surprise, and I have no hesitation in awarding it top marks. The location could not be better in Turku, especially for anyone taking a Silja or Viking Line Ferry, there is an excellent welcome from the staff, the rooms are very tastefully laid out given the constraints of the building, and the breakfast will keep you going on a long voyage. The hotel has been tastefully laid out within a conversion of one of the original buildings in the port, and thus has particular charm.

The rooms are well lit, a good size, and clean, and although the bathroom is rather small, it could not be described as cramped. The free internet access was excellent - especially useful given the selection of TV channels was limited as they tried to sell premium services.

This was my second visit to Turku, so I was already aware that the Town Centre has little to offer, but the main attraction of the castle and the harbourside walk are adjacent to the hotel. An added benefit to travellers is that the hotel is also easily reached from the airport, with Bus Number 1 starting at the airport, and going via the Town Centre to the Harbour. There are two stops in the main harbour, and both are convenient for the hotel – which is a long thin building going from the Viking terminal to the Silja Terminal. If you get off at the penultimate stop – the Viking Terminal you will be dropped literally outside the door to the hotel. To do this if you can’t follow the stop names indicated on the bus you just wait until the bus turns left after passing the castle – and pressing the bell then will mean the bus will stop at the Viking Terminal shortly after turning right as it passes the end of the hotel (a red brick building).

The whole area around the hotel is pleasant enough, without any of the detractions you sometimes get in port areas. You can watch the huge ferries arrive or depart during the evening – or do similar in the morning.

There is a train station within a few metres of the hotel, but this is only used by trains that link up with the ferry times, so you’d need to check if these were an option – otherwise air travellers can get to / from the airport on bus number 1 for less than 3 Euros, and those that really want to see what is in the town centre can use the same bus for a similar fare.

The harbour area also has various museums and ships that can be visited – but at a price.

All in all my stay at the Best Western Seaport was an ideal stay for so many reasons.

We went to this hotel because it's next to the cruise ship harbor and we were heading to one of them in the early morning.

It's a very simple hotel - even too simple compared to the price. The staff was very nice. We liked the breakfast although it's not all that luxurious.

The common areas are wheelchair accessible. The accessible room and its toilet are quite spacious. I think the toilet would not be big enough for a larger wheelchair like electrical wheelchair. The threshold of the toilet is very high and the ramp doesn't help too much. I'm happy I had enough strength in my arms to enter the toilet.

There were 2 good things about this hotel:

1) It`s location in the closest proximity to the harbour and to the brilliant Turku castle. You really do wake up early in the morning to watch a ferry sliding past your window and after the breakfast you can go exploring the sizable castle whatever you want. Or you can start your day with a cup of coffee right on the castle grounds as they have a cozy cafe with that marvellous Finnish pastry.

2) They have pretty huge playground for children inside. But as I`ve never travelled with midgets, I can`t really say whether it`s a rare thing or this time it just caught my eye for once.

Everything else was very basic, room being tiny and facilities homely.

Location is certainly part of this hotel's appeal. It's housed in an old seaport warehouse directly between the Silja and Viking terminals. If you want to watch these ships come and go while you drink your coffee or cocktail, this is the place to be, plus it's a 5-minute walk to the Turku Castle and Forum Maritime Museum. Also, the city bus line #1 stops every 20 minutes right at the door. Downtown Turku can be noisy and some blocks not so beautiful, so this hotel, a 1/2 hour walk along the Aura River from city center, worked for us. Restaurant was reasonable and tasty for dinner.

Hotel staff members were friendly and helpful, including cleaning staff. Feel free to ring the bell at the front desk, as that staffer was often helping in the bar.

Breakfast is nothing special, the usual smorgasbord, and sauna hours are quite limited. Room amenities are are you would expect, but I will say that,, for three adults (we traveled with our 21 y.o. son) were comfortable in this room (unlike many others on our trip) because the third person had a Real Bed and not just a cot.

Wired Internet access in rooms, but WiFi available in lobby and restaurant. Lots of tables in lobby permitted working there easily, but the TV was usually on to a soap opera or talk show.
Be careful you're parking in hotel spots, as many spots near/adjacent to hotel are for city or ship personnel only.

I generally had good hotel experiences in my summer trip to Europe and a few great ones too. This hotel stood out as the only truly bad experience.

My booking was prepaid, but the receptionist insisted there was no record of payment, even after I produced documentation that payment was made. I was pleasant as could be, but firm in what I knew to be correct, but she was rude and said I would have to pay and demanded a credit card to guarantee that. She did say the business office would investigate the matter and have an answer for me in the morning. Next morning I was told that the hotel had in fact received payment from the room. I asked when they found out and was told last night. They hadn't bothered to call me at the room to let me know, which might have saved me from a lot of worry, and not a single apology for inconvenience was issued.

I thought that because I located this hotel on a map and found it was near the castle, it would be a good choice for a night in Turku. The castle is indeed around the corner, but the center of Turku, and anything else of interest was miles away and therefore bad for anyone without a car. The hotel is right at the port where all the big ferries come and go. Smoke and noise from the boats was a constant irritation, so keeping the windows closed was necessary.

Miserable hotel.

Due to Tall Ship’s Race in Turku the hotels were fully booked and we ended up at Best Western Seaport - that is really down in the port next to the big ferries - even though we were not going with the ferry.
The room was clean, but it was warm even though this was not a really hot night. So I guess that during hot night this could be a real problem. You get free parking if you can find a place to park. The parking lot is pretty crowded. Breakfast was nice, the reception worked well. We got help with an extra mattress for the extra bed. And we had internet access (slow, not Wi-Fi).
Being in the port it is pretty far from the town centre. On the other hand very near the charming Castle of Turku
Summary: could be a convenient choice if leaving with a ferry early if the weather is not too hot.
Next time in Turku I’ll probably try something else. To get some change. But I will not avoid it.

We stayed there the night before the ferry left, the night ferry was booked full. The place is close to the ferry port and we got a parking place beside the hotel. What definitely made the stay unpleasant, was the high temperature inside the room under the roof. No a/c - not much sleep possible. Would have been a disaster, if we had planned to drive next day. So we had a leisure day on the ferry. It´s quite a distance to the next restaurants in the city, so you better go there by car if you dare to leave your parking spot..

If you don´t care about sauna all night, it´s a place for you, otherwise not.
