The castle's guide said that when the restoration began, only the walls existed. Now it is like a maze inside with stairs, turns, and hallways leading off to unknown places. Fortunately, arrows point in the correct direction. It seemed that the route covered representative parts of the entire building, We enjoyed imagining what life would have been like then, living inside. The restrooms were very up to date, rather than authentic of the times.
Near the end is a room where visitors can photograph each other in costumes of the period. Expect to spend two hours walking the entire route if you plan to actually stop and look at things.
We walked the mile and a half from the city center along the very nice paths on each side of the river, passing the maritime museum shortly before reaching the castle.
