“Brilliant, homely pub food and great staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012

Simply a brilliant place to eat.

We were put on to Tuulensuu by the trusty Lonely Planet guide to Finland, that rated it the top choice in Tampere - and got it dead right.

Busy, lively pub with a lot of seating. The staff were fluent in English, very efficient and very friendly. Food was quick, hot and delicious. Meatballs and mash potato with real beer.

If you're looking for somewhere informal and friendly, with honest, decent food, this is it.

“We really enjoyed it !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

Take a corner place, put large glass panels in the place of three of its four walls, decorate it like a pub with nice theatre spot lights on the ceiling, let some great music to play distinctively and you have a lively, cozy and youthful place where you can have a good meal or drink a beer (or both).
The whole space may be a little confined and the tables are close to each other but this is a part of the character of this cute little gastropub.
The food was excellent: my wife had the lamb meatballs with beer sauce and creamy goat cheese potatoes which was terrific (maybe a liitle less nutmeg please...). I took a typical Choucroute (sausages, potatoes & sauerkraut Alsacian style) which would make real Alsacians to reconsider their cooking. Good sausages, sauerkraut, nice strong mustard and wonderfully roasted potatoes was the simple secret of success. The portions were hearty.
The beer list is enormous and a liitle help would be acceptable (which we hadn't). The famous Belgian beers (Trappist beers) are particularly honoured here.
If you like to have a good meal, a good cold beer and listen to good music, then this is what you are looking for.

“Serves the most fanciful beers in Tampere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2012

The wide selection of imported special beers available on tap are the real strength of this restaurant. It is highly unlikely that you would find many of them anywhere else in Finland. The selection also changes from season to season. In this May they were serving beers from a small German brewery: Berliner Weisse and a peculiar beer made without any hops. The prices are fairly expensive, but you can find in Tampere bars that are serving very ordinary lager beers at the same prices. There is also an extensive range of bottled beers, including some that have been made to order in a Belgian microbrewery. Some of these are really expensive specialties.

The food is quite good. Some of the Belgian style dishes are rather heavy, but the menu includes a fair number of vegetarian choices, too.

Tuulensuu sells cigars from its own humidor, but smoking inside has not been possible since 2007 when smoking was outlawed in Finnish restaurants without a special smoking room. Now smokers have to go outside where the restaurant has very limited seating.

The staff has been trained to know something about the beers they are serving. Some of them have been there for years and the owner is on the premises from time to time.

A drawback of the popularity of the restaurant is that it can be hard to find seating. The place is not large, the tables are small and the seats are cramped,

“Amazing selection, great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2012

One of the best gastropubs I have ever been to, with a very respectable selection specializing in Belgian beers that the restaurant imports. Not that expensive, considering the quality All the staff have broad knowledge on almost the whole menu and are very helpful. The food is surprisingly great, with a consistent quality and wide selection. Be sure to check the specials during themed weeks!

“nice place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2009

Start of with the negative: Prices are a little high. 7.5e for a pint is a bit much. But that being said, the food is quite good, the wine, beer and cidre selection is very broad. They even have a honey wine called Sima (related to mead) from several different bottlers (maybe nice instead of a port?).. The interior is also one of the nicer, cozier, non-pub styled places in Tampere, that is not an all out restaurant. Staff is friendly and helpful.
