If you are going to Tampere on your first visit, like we were, make sure you go have a look at the Kauppahalli, the indoor food market located about half way down the Hameenkatu close to the department stores. It is sort of hidden there is only one entrance door so make sure you ask someone if you don't find it. We stumbled in by mistake to take shelter from a sudden rainstorm. Inside you will find all kinds of food stalls selling fish in all forms ( salmon in 100 different variations) and smoked fish! Some stalls have chairs and tables and you can enjoy a great lunch, at a good price.
Try the typical Tampere Rye Bread with salmon, it tastes heavenly! If you prefer something exotic close to the market down the road on Hameekatu there is an Irish Pub that serves great Indian Curry, it is located infront of the main Bridge so you have to go down the steps and it has tables directly by the river( or is it a lake?) They also serve Fish&Chips but can't reccomend those my partner felt sick for 3 days, so go for the Indian dishes! Good value shopping also in this area, good prices and nice quality.
