“Queen of Tampere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012 via mobile

This hotel is one of the nicest and different ones I have come across in Finland.

This old soviet styled hotel has nice decoration and excellent location close to old Tampere city sites.

Rooms are quite small but clean and with nice views to the river.

Breakfast was good and staff helpfull and also the price compared to other Tampere hotels good value.

We have stayed in the Hotel several times when visiting Tampere. It is located in the center so it is only a short walk from the city center. The Hotel itself is nice, the rooms are good, clean and value for money is granted. If you expect to have 5 star service and quality forget it, it is better than average and you still enjoy the hotel. Staff is friendly, speak several languages, breakfast is ok and the rooms clean and good. For business travel or a short week-end stay this is a good choice.

I've stayed at many hotels in Tampere and this is my third stay at the Tammer, which is by far my favourite. The hotel is steeped in history and still maintains its glory, the rooms are comfortable and clean. The staff are very friendly and the hotel is excellently situated close to the centre.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

I spent one night at this hotel back in April. Fortunately, it was just one night.

First of all, I paid EUR 204 for one night at Sokos Hotel Tammer. Even in Tampere that is infamous for some of the highest room rates in Finland, this is an astronomically high rate. I can live with this, if I get reasonable service in return. However, this was not the case at Sokos Hotel Tammer.

All of us should be able to take it for granted that the WiFi connection works in a reliable, high-performance manner. I was staying on the 7th floor, and this was definitely not the case. I was told that I simply cannot expect the WiFi connection to work there. I was told to use the network cable, but this did not work either. Come on Sokos Hotel Tammer, it is 2012 now!!! I was able to solve this issue by connecting my laptop to the network cable that was originally connected to the TV. However, this cable was so short that I had to pull the TV and the desk under it close to the bed. This definitely made for a very uncomfortable working position.

I had a very nice and spacious corner room on the top floor of this hotel. This was my preference to ensure the best possible sleep quality. This helped to a very limited degree, as the walls seemed to be ultra thin. A noise from the neighbor room's toilet, shower, and TV could be heard very clearly.

I do understand that Sokos Hotel Tammer is located in an old building that causes some obvious room layout restrictions. However, I cannot understand how a superior room can have such a small bathroom.

I have been complaining about the quality of the breakfast at Sokos Hotels several times. This time was no exception. Sokos Hotel Tammer continues to provide the most industrial breakfast on earth. One of the positives is that they do take into consideration local ingredients, such as the famous black sausage.

On the positive side, the hotel has a superb location at the center of Tampere, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Also, the hotel has been renovated to respect its history, so - unlike the other Sokos Hotel - this hotel does have a soul and particular character.

All in all, I must say Sokos Hotel Tammer must be doing better than this in the future. I would like to say that I am unlikely to stay at this hotel in the future, but - realistically - Tampere does not have too many other viable hotel options available. Yes, they do have those Soviet-style chain hotels, such as Scandic and Cumulus, but that is it.

Hotel is well situated in the centre of Tampere, close to everything. Staff is friendly, breakfast nice. Hotel has been renovated having respect to its history, yet it has all the up-to-date facilities. Room was nice and clean, not very big but enough space for two people.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing Koskipuisto park and Tammerkoski rapids.

Well located good hotel offering nicely restored historical surroundings. Review based on a two night stay in February (background of spending 80+ nights per year in different hotels around the globe).

Location:
The hotel is located very nicely, next to Tammerkoski (the rapids) and Koskipuisto park but still very close to the actual city centre. Also the Finlayson area offering many restaurants, bars, movie theatre, Espionage museum etc is just a stone’s throw away.

Room:
Received a room with two single beds in the 4th floor, facing north right into an impressive classical style fire station (built 1907). Room was quite all right for two people, not too small though it wasn’t the biggest one I’ve seen either. Basic functionality such as LCD TV and mini bar was available.

Bathroom was very small but I guess there’s some price to be paid when you are staying in a hotel built in the 1920s! Some noise from the corridor and quite a lot from the street. Also the fire station next door being a real functional fire station naturally means that fire trucks with sirens are possible, any time of the day or night…

Etc:
Service was fast, efficient and very friendly.

Lobby bar was a cosy place to spend time among a big collection of books and some games. Prices were rather steep but that’s true in almost any hotel lobby bar, I guess…

Breakfast was quite all right with a rather wide selection & good quality. Definite highlight was the local specialty of mustamakkara (literally black sausage) with lingonberry jam! And the environment was rather special, the dining room looked like a castle hall with a very high ceiling full of different ornaments.

Would I return there?
Yes, sure. A nice hotel in a nice location
