Where to start? Are you looking for a good location? fantastic views? .... (and that's about it...) Then you have come to the right place! But let's be honest - we all expect a bit more considering the fact this is supposedly a four star establishment. Icon? but of course - a towering large 80s building over the wonderful and eye-catching Tammerkoski... But what works for some - doesn't work for others - the end result : fantastic views when looking out... rather a monstrosity when looking at it from the outside. But maybe i am biased, and have to respect that the 80s did give us something : a warning of what hairdos not to have and that jeans should not be warn with everything. Oh! and headbands! Trying to get some structure into this reviews - let's start from the beginning. Entering the Lobby... this action takes you back to the age when Gold and Marble dominated interior deco... where huge chandeliers suspended from a 3.3 metre high ceiling and looking a bit tasteless - were in order. But hey - you can't have it all and for some - consistency is a great thing : the building looks 80s from the outside and the lobby has the same feeling - no shock there, but on a side note - perhaps the renovation of the rooms in 2008 could have gone along with modernisation of the lobby? The reception staff was most helpful in informing about the possible upgrades - so was the screen behind urgently reminding the travellers to recommend them on tripadvisor (seems to work! doing so as we speak!) Bang for the buck? I don't think so.... Any higher level floors are 20 euros extra per night and the difference between the standard and superior rooms seems to be in the availability of slippers and bathrobes for the guests. In other words: overpriced. But this is Finland after all and the hotel culture here isn't at its best. One can only name a few hotels which deserve to be called that in the entire country, and those do make it a habit to be completely overpiced anyway... 145 euro/night is a bit steep for the quality offered and the size of the room etc... Oh but now the room.... the superior room - very high floor. Pros - great views of Tammerkoski! Cons: Angled window overlooking the neighbours...(ask for a corner room!) windows that havent been washed in a while (understandable) colony of spiders waiting outside the window, room darkish. Contemporary and modern design? One might call it that. Not breathtaking in any way. Beds are comfortable enough and the bathroom functional (although the composite-based sink doesnt look its best). An issue arrises here with the service. When the rooms are being serviced it would be lovely if that included for instance washing the sink or toilet bowl. Also swiping of any unwanted dust from available services is in my opinion a general maintenance in a hotel which pirdes itself with 4 stars. These issues certainly need to be resolved. Sound proofing is another! For those of you who enjoy your sleep in silence - be aware ! Make sure the room you are given is not anywhere close to elevators!! Otherwise you end up with a very annoying noise everytime a person decides to change floors... The breakfast experience (Onni onni orava!) was surprisingly good considering the size of the hotel. No large crowding, selection of food was satisfactory and enough space in the restaurant to not have to cramp with 20 other people eating their blood sausages. A giant 2 metre squirrel? passing through the restaurant may put some off - especially if they have been partying the night before, but is a great treat for the kids. As for other aminities : The hotel pool NEEDS to be warmer... It was freezing and the jaccuzi wasn't a lot better either. Understandably pleasant if one comes from the sauna - but not for enjoying a swim. A side note - hopefully if any renovations of the lobby are done, the swimming pool area will be renovated too - it has potential to be a really nice and relaxing place if only an effort is put in... As a summary : the photos look good, but the details are what counts. My overall experience was way below expectations. Number One in Tampere? Oh Dear.... what do the others look like...?
Tip 1: Ask for corner rooms - the ones in the middle of the building have angled windows facing the...
