“Good hotel in a beautiful spot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

This is a good hotel especially if travelling by car. There is plenty of free parking outdoors; inside parking costs 10 Euros/day. Hotel is situated in a beautiful area on a wooded hill overlooking a lake. Close by is a charming residential area with narrow, winding streets and wood buildings. Distance to the city centre is less than 2 km; bus number 25 stops right in front of the hotel but it does not take that long to walk either.

We had a twin room on third floor. It was quiet with no outside noises even though it faced the street and parking area. The room was quite spacious with two 90 cm beds, a desk with a chair and an armchair with a small table. Bathroom was large with lots of hooks and shells to place your stuff. Hotel had undergone some renovation so the interior was clean and fresh. Only negative thing in the room were an old TV with bad reception (were informed that TVs will soon be changed) and constant humming sound from the mini-bar. And naturally the pillows were clumpy, but it is the same in most hotels and I had prepared and had my own pillow with me.

Breakfast buffet was well-arranged and had a good selection of just about everything you would want for breakfast; there was even local delicates black sausage. Breakfast was served in a spacious restaurant with large windows to the lake.

Room Tip: Many rooms have view to the lake

The hotel itself is quite ok and meets basic expectations for travelling either on business or with family. One can see that the building is getting quite old and needs renovating. Cleaning in rooms could be better: especially in the bathroom stains in doors and panels gives uncomfortable feeling. The car park is good: there area a lot of free parking lots outside.

This would basically still be acceptable, but the service in the restaurant was something between poor, rude and/or just cold. I really can't say anything else but that they should improve - but I will not be seeing it. We entered the restaurant on the moment it opened, and one waiter informed that half of it was reserved for conference visitors (quite natural although) and we should go sitting to the area closer to the restaurant entrance. However, no guidance, just rejecting us. On the spot we sat on a table on "free" area another waiter yelled across the restaurant that we can't sit there because it's reserved. There was no sign of it, and the other waiter addressed us to the area... how rude and embarrassing. Reminded me of that old Finnish movie where Uuno Turhapuro acted as a restaurant waiter.

The meal itself was ok, in fact delicious, but the service struggled again after the main course. It took so long time that I believe they just forgot us a couple of time even there was just a handful of customers in the restaurant. Part of my entourage simply had to leave before getting to the desert phase because they ran out of time to get to next events. I don't understand anymore Scandic policy of giving restaurant vouchers at the reception and then not welcoming visitors to have something to eat... What's going wrong?

Based on this experience I will definitely prefer other hotels in Tampere next time around. Perhaps the whole hotel chain will change.

Nice choice if you have car and will have beautiful view over lake outside city center. Big rooms, big window, free wi-fi connection, bat that it´s. Old Finnish traditional congress hotel, poor soundproofing, hue of old but not so good times. Friendly staff, standard hotel breakfast.

Unfortunately, I couldn't sleep in this room because of the noise of the air condition. Although I asked at the reception to cut it off, they promised, but couldn't manage it due to the general conditions.
Also in the breakfast room there was so much noise because of the small children. I would prefer a separate room for people who have to use your hotel during business stays in Tampere.

Outside Tampere centrum, in the middle of the small natural park, on the lakeside. So place is nice but as hotel is a bit outdated it might not be the best choice for tourists. On your way someplace else it is fine to stay one night. Price is somewhat 20-40 euros cheaper that the other Scandic hotels in Tampere. Food in restaurant was over my expectations and breakfast buffet is "scandinavian", huge plus. Rooms is ok or nice but e.g. my bathroom was a bit "dirty looking" althought well cleaned.

The hotel is old and need a big renovation. We spent two nights (weekend) in August 2012 during our visit in Tampere in a very big 'Family superior plus' suite - two separate rooms, one bathroom and a toilet, a plenty of room for two adults and kids and one big dog. A staff was very warmful and polite, they make us feel cozy and wanted guests. Room was clean, a cleaning works fine. A decoration and colours were out of this time, from 80's or 90's, maybe. A breakfast was nice, but not exceptional, with a local specialty 'black sausage and lingonberry jelly' - if you want try this, try it in Tampere!! A swimming pool and saunas were also old, but worked fine for us. A gym was well-equipmented, clean and new. The hotel is situated near by a lake and surroundings are peaceful and 'nature' - ideal for dog-owners. At the same time, it is, of course, a little bit long way from the centrum of the Tampere city - in summer there is a 'city-train' for a little, non-guided sight-seeing tour and transportation to the downtown, leaving at the front-door of the hotel. A restaurant offers decent food for a dinner, but, again, the interior decoration of the restaurant is poor, like a school canteen better than a hotel restaurant. Kids playrooms and toys were dirty, videogames were good and worked fine.

Classic tip for a short work after lunch: You should visit the Pyynikki tower for a nice cup of coffee/soda and excellent doughnut!

Room Tip: Choose 'superior' room if possible, bigger and better than average rooms.

With the many other Scandic and other hotels in Tampere, I just cannot recommend staying here. It's location is out of the downtown area, and although in a great setting, it isn't convenient and driving is required (or a reasonably long walk) to get downtown.
The other problem is the hotel itself. It reminded me of my college dormitory in the 1970s - concrete walls in the hallway and only a strip of carpet on the floor. My room was in desperate need of updating and had numerous stains and marks on the wall, door and furniture. The wooden parts of the desk were splintered as well as the bottom of the bathroom door. Those problems of course made me wonder what I could not see that was in poor condition. It was just warm enough to be disappointed that there was no air conditioning and somewhat angry that the windows do not open.
On the positive side - I did see a sign that said the hotel was under construction and my colleague could hear construction at 8:00 am sharp. You should check to make sure construction is completed - but even then downtown is more convenient for business. Parking is free; the breakfast was okay; the internet worked.

Room Tip: If you have to stay there NOW, ask to see if you can get a room already renovated.
