“Decent option near the city center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

Stayed in Sokos Albert for 3 days in January with my wife and our friends (young family with child). Location is just perfect - all city attractions, malls and central railway station are in 5-15 mins walk, while the hotel itself is located in a quiet residential area. There is a parking in a basement floor - it's not free (costs about 24 euros/day) but it's very convenient to have a parking inside the hotel in winter. Breakfast was excellent, really hearty and all staff was friendly and helpful.

Rooms are pretty decent, quiet and spacious, furnishing is not new but in a good condition. The only flaw was an absent of an additional bed option - our friends could not arrange any additional bed for their 4 y.o. son in their double room.

When I first walked in I got a bit confused because the reception looked more like a bar, which it also was... The elevators are tiny and very old fashion, but the system works if you just read the sign.

The cleaning could've been better, there was a bit of dust here and there, the toilet didn't look like it had been cleaned before we got there. The most disgusting part was the handkerchief hanging on one of the radiators filled with buggers...

The rooms are very big, which is nice. The shower is a bit weird, you can't really close the door to the shower by design.

The breakfast wasn't that bad but still not the best I had. The location of the hotel is pretty good. Which means there's no need for a tram/bus ticket if your only staying in the centre of Helsinki.

I would say that Helsinki is one of the most boring big cities I've ever visited but if you ever go there don't forget to buy Felix salmon mayo and if you want American burgers visit chico's close to Sandviken

The outstanding features of this hotel are its service and its breakfast. The location is good, about 20 minutes walk to centre of Helsinki and near restaurants and "supermarkets" if you want to buy food for snacks, and Helsinki's "design district". About 20 to 25 minutes walk from the 2 hour ferry to Tailinn, Estonia. There is a bus that goes by the hotel, but we usually just walked to where we were going.

I had asked for a quiet room and got one, on the sixth floor. Unfortunately, it faced east and this hotel caters to Nordics who do not mind sun in the early morning in June. They do have curtains but not "black-out" curtains. They offered to switch our room for one facing west but we did not want to change for another two nights. Within half an hour they sent up somebody who taped down our curtains which really cut down on the light. It did mean no light during the day but that is the fastest response either of us have ever had from a hotel. The reception and staff in general was always helpful, cheerful, and friendly. The only caveat is if you are sensitive to light I would ask for a room that does not face east if you are going to be there when the sun rises early.

The good part about being woken early was we went to their breakfast which was great. No matter what you eat, or do not eat, you would like this breakfast. Not only porridge, but organic rye porridge. Fresh fruit (I think strawberries and a Finnish berry like a blueberry).
Cheese, cold meats, herring, various kinds of Scandinavian bread, pancakes, even various kinds of coffee. I love breakfast and I thought Israeli breakfasts were the best in the world, but this was just as good in a different way.

The room had both a safe and small fridge which I like. No fancy little bottles of conditioner, and limited space for your clothes but for location, service, and breakfast cannot be beat. Receptionists and hotel staff spoke very good English; most people in Helsinki spoke English..Street signs are in Finnish and Swedish. We saw several menus in Finiish, Swedish, Russian and English. Sweden and Russia at different times had conquered Finland but the Finnish don't care. If you want to come to Finland and spend money, they welcome you.

We had heard their Italian restaurant was good so decided to eat there one night when we were tired. Not only reasonable, but delicious. In fact, better than some well-known restaurants we ate in elsewhere in Helsinki.

Room Tip: Facing east is away from main street so quieter but early morning sun in summer months could disturb...

The Ice cream at hotel restaurant is better than Haagen Daaz, Truly amazed to have experienced the best ice cream now and had to wait for it so long in travels. Its made in the kitchen, no artificial flavors.fresh, large chunks of fruit, delightful and uplifting flavors, well-balanced, delicious. chocolate chunks, caramel chunks, both italian sherbets, even mango, and creamy ones. The chef who came up with these recipes deserves a gold medal! Try also the licorice creme brule dessert with lime-lemon sherbet, will enchant you with the match of flavors. Other than that hotel has a cosy lodge like lobby setting, and functional rooms. Good and peaceful place to meet up with people.

Albert is a good choice if you don't need to stay next to the stations. There is a tram connection to the railway station but walking won't last more than 10 - 15 minutes. I stayed here one night during the ice hockey world championships. We only slept here and spent the rest of the two days in the hockey arena but still I found the room, staff and atmosphere very nice.

I had a standard room shared with my friend and it was OK. Not very big but equipped with all the necessary items. We didn't seem it worth to invest to higher category room for such a short visit. The breakfast was really good and we had a great start for another busy day in Helsinki.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

I had a one night accommodation at Sokos Hotel Albert in November 2012. In Helsinki there are two different Sokos hotels on the same street within 200 meters. Previously I have stayed few times in the other one, Sokos Hotel Aleksanteri. But now I wanted to try this hotel. One reason for this was the price. Now and then Sokos hotels chain has quite good offers for weekend. Now my room rate now was only 70 euro/room/night.

The hotel building from outside is not very welcoming - old 60-70’s style brick house. But luckily it is only outside surface. When you step in, the atmosphere and decoration is totally different. Room decoration (furniture, colors) is made with quite good taste. The atmosphere in your room is modern and refreshing. Lots of mirrors, light furniture, desk (cover made from glass), nice wall painting, green carpet etc. A flat TV, mini bar, safety box and iron was also included.

Even though the interior decoration was quite nice, you could also notice well, that the room was little bit worn out. F.ex there were very much stains on the walls (repainting needed). Also bed cover was quite dirty. Bathroom was nice, but the cleaning there should be better. Most of the areas at first sight seemed to be clean, but if you took look a little bit closer (f.ex under washstand), you noticed clearly, that there was dust on the wall.

Breakfast buffet started at 8 am on Sunday morning. The buffet was like everywhere else in Finnish hotels and included f.ex bacon, eggs, porridge, tomatoes, cucumber, cheese, cold cuts, yoghurt, sausages, coffee, tea, cereals, fresh fruits, orange and apple juice. Not the best breakfast I have had. It was ok, but not very exceptional tasty. This time for me the best meal was warm gratinated vegetables prepared in the oven.

It was quite nice and easy stay there. The service everywhere was ok - maybe not very personal but it was polite, formal and friendly. Hotel surrounding is quite peaceful comparing to many other hotels in Helsinki. And it is not far from the main shopping area but still in the quiet area (even during the weekend nights). I recommend this hotel to everyone.

I have stayed at this hotel a couple of times, and found its location very pleasant: a quiet but central district of Helsinki, next to the Sinebryuhoff art museum (recommended) and about 10 minutes' walk to the main square. Nice interiors, cosy rooms, modern facilities, and comfortable beds. The upgraded rooms have tea and coffee making facilities.

Buffet breakfast is served in the spacious breakfast room, which is actually the hotel restaurant specializing in Italian cuisine.

The only thing I would complain about is the room temperature: the heating system only starts working when a guest moves in, and it takes a couple of hours to warm the room - could be an issue when the outside temperature drops down to minus 20 Celcius, which is not at all uncommon in Finland.
