“Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

Very nice hotel. easily accessible from the town center. I had selected this place after looking at the history and was fascinated by it. I was not disappointed.
The hotel rooms were nice and comfortable. Size of rooms was also decent. The place has a charm and oozes a lot of character.
From the lobby it might not look like a jail but as soon as you enter the corridors to the rooms. you get feel of it being a Jail.
Breakfast buffet was also good with enough of Hot and Cold options.

One point to note for the travelers is that the free Wifi does not work in the rooms because of the walls. If you want to use it you have to come to the common areas or take a cable from the reception for wired connection (which they provide free of charge)

Location of the hotel is okay. It's not close enough to walk and not far enough to take a taxi to city center. But there is a tram that stops right in front of the hotel so connectivity is not an issue.

One point which I did not like was that the timing for the restaurant was supposed to be till 11:00 and knowing this I had decided to eat at the hotel on the day of my check-in. But it was closed at 10:45 when i went there and had to survive on the minibar.

Other than that it was a good stay. I would recommend the hotel to travelers looking for a different kind of stay.

Quality rooms - comfortable, nice restaurant and excellent service. The character of the old prison is superbly preserved. Look out for bargain rates outside summer season. Tram stop outside - just a few minutes ride to city centre.

Just to be clear, this will be a different experience from anything you would expect when booking a hotel in Helsinki. I was expecting to see another impersonal hotel for business travellers but was in for a treat.

The hotel has been transformed from a prison and the theme is carried in everything you see. Staff are wearing old inmate - type clothing and welcome you to the big house when you check in.

Breakfast was served on plates and cups that reminded me of prisons, apparently sold by Ikea, and it does give a feel to it when you scoop up some beans from a metallic plate. No shanking happened as far as I'm aware of.

The rooms were really charming and converted from old cells by knocking down one wall. Rooms were tidy and bed welcoming to a weary traveller.

Location is easy to get to and tram stop is right outside. We got a good deal for the room so it's definitely worth shopping around before you book a room.

Fascinating & interesting layout - a former prison. Each room seems to comprise two cells joined together. The result is not large, but ample. Everywhere clean, and nicely painted. Staff very helpful and friendly. Very good breakfast variety. Nice free gym; sauna available for extra, but we didn't sample. Free wifi around; also free internet available on PC in the lounge.

Tram stop just outside hotel, leads to city centre in a few minutes. After arrival, we usually walked into the centre - about 20 minutes.

We ate out during the evenings, so didn't sample dinner in the hotel, but cooked breakfast lovely.

Ferry nearby to special island, semolina (not spelt like this though).

Best Western Premier Hotel Katajanokka is a pleasant hotel located in a very nice quiet neighborhood near the centre. The tram stops in front of the hotel. The special feature of the hotel is that it is a converted prison. The renovation is very well executed and, opposed to what you might think, the hotel is very comfortable and even cozy. Highly recommended.

The hotel staff is dressed in pseudo prison clothes. We thought this was not a funny joke but it is not really bothersome.

We had a nice, quiet and spacious business plus room with bathtub.

Nice and quiet neighborhood.

The breakfast was good and varied a bit every morning which was nice.

We will definitely book this hotel again.

The hotel building has previously been a jailhouse and it shows in decoration nicely. Big and clean rooms. Wireless wifi-connection worked only in the lobby because of thick walls. We were upgraded from standard room to superior. We enjoyed!
