“Can't go wrong--only right--at Hotel Glo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2010

Spent two nights at Hotel Glo at the end of August and it exceeded our expectations. Room design--amazing; front desk--most helpful; buffet breakfast--plentiful and delicious. Hotel features very nice, cool, bar and outdoor seating, perfect on a nice day. Spa with saunas was nice enough but if you have any down time, spending it in your room is even better! Our very spacious room, with many large windows, overlooked a relatively quiet pedestrian street and came with bathrobes, slippers, flat-screen TV, and option of other comforts such as different types of pillows, even a back/foot massager, available upon request. Be sure also to take advantage of: Dinner discounts offered by the hotel at nearby excellent restaurants (spend 40 euros and get 60 euros worth of food/drinks); free Internet/Wifi, free bicycle use, and even free use of a car. We wished we had more days in Helsinki to do all of this. Room rates are high, but if you are planning your trip in advance as we did, you might be able to get a great deal. Highly recommend. One of the best--and most comfortable--hotels we've ever stayed at.

During an 18 day trip through Scandanavia, the Hotel Glo was our absolute favorite. The staff was lovely and helpful, the room beautiful and comfortable, and the breakfast great. It was a fabulous experience and we would love to go back for a longer stay.

Stayed here in light of the reviews on TripAdvisor. Glo is one of the most comfortable hotels we've ever visited. We arrived very early (around 8:30 AM!) but were nevertheless allowed to check in by the polite staff at reception. We stayed in a deluxe room, which was huge by European standards. The two twin beds were super comfortable, and the hotel provides a list of free luxuries to help you sleep and make you feel comfortable. Everything was top notch. Reception helped me arrange a superb in-room massage with two hours of my request. In sum, the Glo deserves all the praise it has received on this site!

Great rooms. Upmarket and different. Given an option of room incl. Way it faced, shower or shower/bath etc. Slippers/robes. Good bed and shower. No help with bags though. Overall terrific!

Staff very helpful. Reception and lift areas looked more like a hostel than a hotel however once into the room things improved. Large comfortable bed with good quality linen. Bathroom was dark with deep brown tiles and similar coloured wood. Plentiful supplies of toiletries and tea, coffee etc. Very central location able to walk to most places.

This hotel is in an excellent position in Helsinki. We could walk everywhere including to the hotel from the station where the Finnair bus stops (much much cheaper than a taxi).
The staff were very helpful and friendly - helped us with restaurant choices and reservations.
The room was small but well set out. Lovely comfy bed, tea and coffee and ok air conditioning. Everything was clean and in good condition. We were impressed with how quiet the room was - the hotel was full but we didn't hear a thing and despite the room overlooking Alexsanterinkatu (trams, buskers etc) the triple glazing blocked out all street noise.
Did not try the hotel spa facilities so can't comment but did notice the treatments were very expensive. The hotel bar was good for a drink and to sit outside people watching.
The only drawbacks at the hotel were breakfast and the restaurant. We went to Carlito's for an evening meal. The food was good but so slow to arrive. Whether this was a one off I can't say - there were a lot of large parties in and something or someone must have had a meltdown in the kitchen as it took an hour for 2 pizzas to arrive. The waiter deducted 20% from our bill without being asked because of the delay.
Breakfast on the first day (Friday morning) was not good. The choice and food was fine but there was not enough room - eventually we found a table to share. The layout of the buffet is the main problem: the area is too small and there is no clear direction to go so it turns into a melee. The staff try to keep things replenished but were struggling which meant that people were standing around in a small space waiting. The second day was quieter - I guess you have to pick your time carefully! We paid £91 for a double room with breakfast through travelrepublic - I think this was ok for Helsinki and the position.

I stayed at Hotel Glo for two weeks with my husband and infant daughter.

The Good:
- Hotel was clean. Hotel is new and hotel rooms are nice. Wood floors and modern design. Fairly good size for European standards. We had a king sized bed in our room. A wooden crib was provided for my daughter. Rooms have a separate toilet room, shower room and bedroom area. Free wireless internet. TV. Kettle, instant coffee and fridge. Well equipped.
- Breakfast is included with most rooms. There is a fairly good selection but it is the same every day (see comments under "The Bad").
- Spa is included in some room packages. Spa and sauna area on 8th floor is fantastic.
- Hotel location is great. We could walk to the market square, nearby attractions and most of the ferry locations to Suomenlinna, ferry to Tallinn/Stockholm, etc. Good neighbourhood, lots of shopping and lots to do all within walking distance.
- Rooms are well built and quiet. Couldnt hear anything occuring on the street, in the hallway or in neighbouring rooms.

The Bad:
- Three elevators, but so narrow that you can barely get in with your suitcase.
- Breakfast is the same every day. You can only eat so much of the same thing for two weeks.
- Although housekeeping did a fairly good job, they did cut corners sometimes. Our toilet wasnt cleaned for several days.
- Room service food was outrageously expensive. We paid almost $25 Cdn for a hamburger with fries.
- The wireless internet password changes every 24 hours which is a pain since you have to call down to the lobby every day to get a new password.
- There was air-conditioning but it wasn't working very well. The first week in Helsinki was during a heat wave and it was difficult to sleep.

Tips:
- Buy beer or snacks at nearby grocery stores, either S-Market or Stockmanns, both within 2 blocks of hotel. Much cheaper!
- The "Kauppatori" or market square has good food for a fair price. Try the reindeer meatballs.
- Good restaurants within walking distance include Fransmanni, Raffaello and Vespa. The Manhattan Steakhouse is also OK, although the meat cuts weren't the greatest - but tasty. Raffaello had the best service, by far. Vespa had very good Italian food.
- Stores and restaurants close early on the weekends - don't wait to have a late meal or you may be out of luck or be limited to expensive room service.
