“Decent business hotel on the edge of Helsinki”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

In spite of what someone wrote, this is nowhere near downtown Helsinki, there's the HI city centre for downtown.

This is the best located PriorityClub hotel you are visiting anywhere to the west of Helsinki... (Espoo) in this case Aalto uni in Otaniemi.
This is the 3rd (or 4th?!) time I've stayed here. I booked a single room & was put on the top / Executive floor (due to PC/IC platinum ambassador).

Parked in the underground car-park (to the right of reception). Check in was very easy, friendly receptionist, free WiFi codes given with door card. Was offered a free drink voucher for the bar (didn't use) & was told that chocolate bar & water in the fridge were complimentary for this room. Plenty of copies of the FT available in foyer.

Room overlooked the Ruoholahti shopping center. 20 minutes after arrival there was a knock at the door, staff member came in with a bowl of fruit & chocolates courtesy of the management... nice!
Makes me wonder if they keep tabs on these reviews?!

Bed was comfy, pillows a bit too thick, duvet a bit light. Shower was good - no bath but that's no problem for me, toiletries good. WiFi was fine, but the TV was a small oldish flatscreen. With the price of TVs so low you'd think they'd upgrade their best rooms.

Still haven't tried their breakfast, usually there is something to eat at the meetings I've been attending. Maybe next time?

Across the road is a shopping center with supermarkets and eateries. Adjacent to the shopping center is Ruoholahati Metro Station - just two stops, few minutes and one is in the Helsinki Downtown. So I would say that the location is absolutely fine. Probably takes longer time to walk from any centrally located hotel to downtown! Rooms small, as mentioned in other reviews. We did not face an housekeeping isssues, mentioned by some other reviewers here. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, and the service and dishes/wine were absolutely fine.

Front office staff at check-in was not too polite, she even remarked somewhat unpleasantly that I had got a good deal (low internet tariff) - and did not bother to even ask if I was a Holiday Inn Priority Club member or not - the fact is that I am a Gold Member which was mentoned along with the reservation data, However, front office lady at check out (different from the one at check in) was very cordial and helpful. She helped us get a taxi to the ferry terminal as well.

This was my first stay at this particular hotel in Helsinki and I must say I am likely to go back. Rooms and bathrooms are on the small side by Helsinki standards but clean and functional. The hotel was also very quiet during the night although it appeared very full. At least judging by the breakfast where you could not move for the amount of people around!
Service at the reception, as many have noted, was very helpful with the staff going beyond their normal duties to sort out issues.
Also sampled the sauna, which was nothing special, but again functional and clean.
The location is convenient both for Helsinki and quick access to Espoo.
Price,I though, was very competitive compared to many of the downtown hotels. Overall a positive experience.

The good part was that the ladies on reception were very nice. And that was it

Bad parts:
Very dirty room
Room service impossible to get (I had to go downstairs to order, again to collect and again to return the uneaten, dreadful food)
Nothing around the hotel so no other dining choices
Heating wasn't working in my first room and no one available to fix so I had to move to another, slightly less dirty room

Room Tip: My tip is don't unless you have to

The Holiday Inn Helsinki West is run by the Restel group, who apparently operate all the Holiday Inn franchises in Finland, along with the Rantasipi hotels. As a business traveler, I am concerned with consistent service quality. I think that this hotel group understands this concept. In general, they deliver an above average service.

This Ruoholahti location is very convenient for those doing business in Espoo (e.g., Nokia House) or downtown (e.g., Finance on Alexanderinkatu). The close proximity to the kauppakeskusta/shopping center is ideal. You also have convenient bus, tram and metro service. Ruoholahti (Grass Bay) is an interesting area to explore. Some surprisingly good restaurants and shops.

The gem of this hotel is the hotel staff. The women who man the reception are charming. They seem to always have a cheerful attitude that makes for a great start to my own day and warm reception after a long day of work.

The sauna at this hotel would be better if their engineering staff would fix the piped musik into the lounge, correct the defect with the sauna glass door's stop mechanism and give us back the sauna towels in the cabinet.

The breakfast is still above standards for EU but dropped below for past Finland standards without ruisleipa/rye bread and salmon gravlax. Otherwise, is quite good aamiainen/breakfast.

The rooms are quite good and quite quiet :-)

TIP: Get a PriorityClub membership on arrival and get free WLAN/internet access.

DISCLOSURE: I stay at this hotel regularly on business, am a PriorityClub member and am sensitive to quality changes.

Room Tip: Priority Club Elite members get upgrade to Executive Club room.

Stayed couple of times at this hotel. Conveniently close to espoo as well as city centre , the corporate as well as shopping place.
Well connected by trams and buses. Close to a mall and good asian restuarants in the vicinity.
About the hotel , though the restaurant is above the belt in terms of expense , but corporates have complimentary breakfast which is good for short stay but not that variety in food.
Rooms are good and spacious , beds are remarkably well for a business hotel.
Wifi connectivity is a problem sometimes but there are LAN as well WIFI facility.
Take rooms which has a lake view , its good to see when you wake up.
Overall a good experience and makes your business trip at speed.
Reception was warm and always put on a smiling face .

Room Tip: Lake side view

The Holiday Inn West is a typical business hotel, located on the west side of Helsinki, so not in the center, not good location for nightlife entertainment. It is one of these hotels, nothing special, just OK. Rooms are standard, pretty small with a shower only, no tub, which I regret. The bed is good. The restaurant does a reasonably good breakfast and have a standard dinner menu with some seanonal dishes. Price is pretty reasonable, around 125 Euro per night including breakfast and internet, which is good. All in all, nothing to complain, nothing to get excited about. Just another business hotel.
