If you're looking for good food, great jazz, and a terrific ambiance, Storyville is the place for you. Storyville is centrally located, near the new Helsinki Music Centre. There's a good sized outdoor terrace (during the warmer weather), a cozy piano bar on the ground floor, and a jazz supper club in the lower level. The downstairs club is terrific for a night of listening. There's a well-lit stage, the acoustics are great, and the sight lines are good. There's also a dance floor in front of the stage. The club books a variety of jazz groups from traditional dixieland to bebop. The place is usually packed, especially on the weekends, so if you want to have dinner, reservations are suggested. The menu and wine list are pretty much what you'd expect at a jazz club -- good, not haute gourmet. It's a non-smoking room.
People generally listen to the music -- something one can't take for granted at jazz clubs. There's a charge for the coat check - just think of it as a cover charge, something that's standard at decent jazz clubs. It helps to pay the rent and the musicians. The restaurant opens at 8:00. The music starts at 8:30. On the weekends they often have two bands. No extra charge for staying for both shows. If you're a night owl you can stay late into the night.
At a time when jazz supper clubs are closing down, at least in the States, Storyville in Helsinki is a treasure -- a place where people gather, sit back and unwind, have some good food and drink, and listen to great music. Who could ask for more?
