“Great music centre in the heart of Helsinki”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

Helsinki Music Centre (Finnish: Helsingin Musiikkitalo) is a big and pretty newly built music center in the heart of Helsinki. The building is mainly made of copper and glass. It's a wonderful and green building, near the beautiful Töölönlahti (Toolo Bay). The building maybe don't seem enormous from the street, but the truth is that most of the whole construction is underground! There are many different, bigger and smaller, halls and areas inside, and the architecture is gorgeous!
The music centre was a great investment, and it has been very successful and popular. There are really a lot of events every single day. You can see and listen to a big variation of music, concerts and other performances there, and I heartily recommend it for tourists as well as for the city's residents! You can enter the building for free, if you want to walk around in the main hall, and go to the café, but otherwise you need to pay a ticket. Enjoy!

“It does not look good, but...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

The Music Center looks like a cartoon box outside, but it is a marvelous place to listen to music. The acoustics is very good and the design of the big hall is ingenious. At the Center there are different halls for different purposes: chamber music, small groups, etc. At the big hall there are 1700 seats; therefore it is mostly for symphony concerts - but sometimes even for rock. I have only had good seats, but I have heard that some seats are bad. Generally it is a very good experience.

“Modern architecture and high-tech acoustics”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

Helsinki's new Music House is one of the best places in Europe for music concerts...
If you get a chance to attend a concert there, I advise highly to take it.
It's right in front of the house of Parliament..

“great centre but some seats in main hall are horrible”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

+ great architecture, fantastic acoustics, very unusual seating
- a lot of seats force you either behind a railing which you have to glimpse through (the ones high up) or block your view in general (if you sit behind the orchestra, e.g. in the first row) - be super careful which seats you book!

“Fine music experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013

Being from Austria, we're pretty particular as far as classical music is concerned, but we were fully satisfied with our evening at the music centre on March 3, 2013, where the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sakari Oramo, played Bach (Carl Philipp Emanuel), Paganini and Nielsen. Violin soloist for the Paganini piece was the amazing 20-year old Nancy Zhou from Texas, playing an instrument almost ten times as old. Ms. Zhou gave an additional solo performance after the concert, which was broadcasted live (radio).
Hungry tourists who come directly to a concert without dinner will appreciate the fact that for food before the concert and in intermission you are not restricted to tiny, expensive bites (as in most concert houses all over the world). Moderately priced full-sized sandwiches are available!
The layout of the concert hall is very unusual, with the visitors seated in a full circle around the orchestra, and the acoustics are impressive. We had tickets in the last row but one, behind the orchestra, and yet the sound was perfect.
A concert at this music centre can be a true highlight during a visit to Helsinki. Get the tickets as early as possible!
