“See Finland through it's art and artists”

Learning about Akseli Gallen-Kalela in Paris this spring, there's a lot more to see and learn here: like Helene Schjerfbeck and more...

“Lunch at Ateneum cafeteria”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

Lunch is Ok, not so expensive. Salad is free, you can choose over 3 or 4 main courses. Always there is options for vegetarian people. The service is quite fast in general, especially when it is not at peak lunch time. The employes have disccount so between 11?30 and 12?30pm the cafeteria in more crowded (Finnish people have lunch very early). It is worth to visit if you are nearby and want to have an average food with averge price. The place is clean and not so noise considering it is kind of cafeteria.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

We paid 12 euros to see a simple exhibition with very few artists. This is becoz the Museum has raised its fees to force visitors to see both the permanent collection and the temporary exhibtion. The permanent colection exhibited several excellent works by Finnish artists but the number of works exhibited was much fewer than thenumber in the temporary exhibition which was a letdown. For this price, we have seen nore substantial and much better displays in other parts of Europe.

“Real Gem for Art Lovers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

Just across from the main train station in Helsinki, the Ateneum Art Museum has a special exhibition dedicated to Helene Schjerfbeck on the 150th anniversary of her birth. Too little known outside Scandinavia, Schjerfbeck's long career included sojourns in Paris, Brittany, and St. Ives (Cornwall) in the 1880's. The exhibition includes 300 works and runs through October 14, 2012.

“Not to be missed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

The collection of Nordic art is magnificent, with the largest collection of paintings by Helene Schjerfbeck in the world. Other artists to look out for are Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Hugo Simberg and many others that most of us haven't heard of. In addition, the museum contains an outstanding collection of ukiyo-e Japanese woodcuts. All this is housed in a fine late 19th century building opposite the central railway station.
