“Super location and breakfasts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2010

We booked this hotel through an ebay auction of a voucher entitling us to a 2 night's b & b at any time during the following 12 months. It was great value. The hotel is a bit shabby but the staff are good and the location great. It is within a 200 m of the railway station on a principle road but Helsinki is a surprisingly quiet city. The room was bigger than you would expect to get in a more modern hotel and had a en suite wet room with bath. The ceiling of the bedroom was painted to resemble clouds. We had a room on the 3rd floor overlooking the main street but there was no intrusive traffic noise. Round the corner was a 24 hr shop selling snacks, beer and a wealth of everyday items. Very handy if you arrive at 2330 like we did. Breakfasts are self service with with an excellent range. Loads of cold meats, cereals, fruit and yoghurt and hot sausages, scrambled egg(looked a bit strange) meat balls etc . Sets you up for the day. I won't say how little we paid as it might make you jealous.

We were group of 25 students staying here for 1 night. Rooms were ready even we came earlier (around noon). Staff was very helpful in organizing the rooms. Breakfast was very good with different choices. Hotel is in the city center with numerous bars and restaurants nearby. Also the train station is 5 minutes away. Rooms were very clean and cozy.

The room was fairly small but adequate. "Free" internet connection didn't work. Location was great: walking distance to the railway station, tram stop right in front of the hotel, restaurants, pubs and a big cinema across the street. Breakfast was good, except for the apple pie which was still frozen.

The location is very good, though the rooms are quite small. The breakfast was very good, but there wasn't fridge with drinks in the room and one has to go every time to the reception.

On the outside, the hotel doesn't look like much but the (newer, refurbished) rooms are quite nice and sufficient for a weekend break. The bed was really comfy and the TV had a good range of English-language channels, and imports in Finland are always shown subtitled rather than dubbed. Breakfast was excellent and the staff were friendly - the first room wasn't quite suitable and it was changed with no fuss.

Location-wise, this hotel cannot be faulted. It's on three tram lines (including the all-important 3T) all of which go to the central train station, and it's next door to the metro and a small shopping arcade. It's a short walk to the Esplanadi, Aleksanderinkatu and Mannerheinintie. I would stay here again.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2008

Room was just as pictured on the hotel website. Comfortable bed. Nice selection of food for the included breakfast (6:30-10 M-Sat, 7-11 Sun). LCD TV with some English language channels and American shows and movies. Rooms are kept tidy. Central location in the city - short walk to the central station, and a tram stop (6 and 3T&B) and metro stop right out front (this can be an issue if you're a light sleeper or not used to city noise - bring earplugs if so). There's also a small department store next door with a grocery and drug store - chemist on the basement (0 floor) level. Also, free wired internet in the rooms - very fast connection - writing this review on it right now. Only downside is the shower. The bathroom's very nice, but the shower has a half glass partition and no door. The glass doesn't go all the way to the floor, so showering will leave the floor pretty wet - but it dries quickly (ventilation's good).

Travel tip: Tram/bus/metro fares are 2€ each way, but you can get a 6€ tourist day pass that lets you ride on all the transport - including the Suomolinna ferry (the city operated one) for the whole day. 2 day pass is 12€ and 5 day pass is 18€. Don't ride the system without a ticket - they don't check often, but if you're caught its an 80€ fine.

My wife and I stayed here on our 10-day journey thru Norway, Estonia, and Finland. I am surprised at some of the low ratings for this hotel. This is not the most opulent hotel but the rooms are large, the restaurant on the second floor has awesome food for dinner especialy, and it is so centrally located. Plus the price is great! We have stayed at the Banf Springs Hotel in Canada and LLao LLao Resort in Argentina and paid a lot more for rooms that were not even as big as the one we had here.

This hotel is centally located to all attractions, the harbor, the train and central bus stations...making it easy to catch a bus to/from the airport and save lots of money !

I would stay here agian for sure !!!!

  • Liked — Centraly located - great price
  • Disliked — The beds are not the best, but by euro standards the room was large
