In stark contrast with the nearby Lutheran Cathedral, the Uspenski Cathedral mixes the warmth of red bricks with the glamor of the gilded domes. It can be seen from a long distance, emerging from an Alvar Aalto building separating it from the seafront.
The inside of the cathedral reverberates its mystical atmosphere from every corner. The solemnity of the place is underlined by the rich ornaments on every wall and the impressive concentration of artwork. The central screen separating the main space from the most sacred part, opens during religious services and the priests officiate at the altar behind it, while the faithful remain on the this side praying and chanting, all making the service quite vibrant.
However, the majestic atmosphere can still be perceived even during the normal hours, when the occasional faithful visit the church for prayers and devotions. Though it is not allowed to take flash photos, you should ask the verger and he will normally allow some shots without flash, if taken with the respect that the place commands.
