“Spend a relaxing summer day here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2014

Beautiful nature, possibility to swim and sunbath, nice restaurant, picnic areas and grill amenities. One of my favourite summer spots in Helsinki!

“Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

Helsinki is located by sea and has some public islands for common use easy access. Take a boat to Pihlajasaari, pack a picknic basket or eat in the local restaurang. It is about 20 mins boat ride which is fun in it self. Swimming wear is a must, and fun you will have. Sea nature and wilderness so close to the centre.

“Perfect escape from Helsinki”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

Pihlajasaari is an island that offers a perfect escape from Helsinki. Just take a 15 minute boat trip from Kaivopuisto (next to Café Carusel) or from Ruoholahti (very close to Ruoholahti metro station). For the boat you will pay after the boat leaves so no need to book any tickets in advance. Pihlajasaari has nice beaches (including a nudist beach), toilet facilities (that are somewhat hideous) and a restaurant. There are good view to Helsinki from the island. What I personally like is to follow all those massive cruise ships that regularly pass by the island.

“Good place to sunbath”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

I love the place - located just outside helsinki you have to take ferry or come by your own boat. Many nice beaches, nice rocks and decent restaurant where you can have food or just coffee / drinks.

“For some easy livin´”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

A great place to spend a summer day, Pihlajasaari (Rowan Island) actually consists of two islands connected to each other with a sort of bridge. You take a water bus from Merisatama - a two-way ticket for adults is 6€ (summer 2014) - on a warm & sunny day you´ll probably want to have a seat on the sun deck - and enjoy the 10-15 minute ride. They even have a fully licensed bar on board these days (this would have been unheard-of 10 years ago...).

First thing after arriving is basically to choose between the sand beaches immediately next to the harbour (facing western Helsinki) or take a hike to the parts of the islands facing the open sea. You can also decide to have a cold drink in the summer restaurant Villa Hällebo - a lovely place to visit, and the food is nice, mostly basic Finnish "cuisine". I´m afraid my review is strongly biased for a number of reasons, not least because me and my wife had our wedding party in the aforementioned restaurant in 1997...

All in all, Pihlajasaari is great for families with small children, for those that wish to swim in the waves of Helsinki - Tallinn ferries, for anyone not too busy to rest by the sea, or have a nice picnic with friends... With the exception of those tied to a wheelchair or having other serious difficulties in moving around, I´d recommend this location for anybody. Note: no bicycles or dogs are allowed on board the water-bus!
