“Opportunity to learn more about Finland”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2014

The National Museum is a good introduction to Finnish history from prehistoric times up our days. Many archaeological finds. Good section on church history and Sami life. Very interesting temporary exhibition on Tsar Alexander III and the imperial summer holidays in Finland (until 14 September 2014). Good explanations in English.

“Not too huge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2014

to explore in a few hours. Gives a good picture of finnish life, preferably with Seurasaari island. This museum perhaps is too upper class centered due to hand to mouth living of most Finns during the past centuries. The museums of provincial towns such as Oulu and Kuopio give a better picture of vigorous survival of Finns in the harsh condiotions of short summers, long winters and dangerous neigbours of the east.

“Disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2014

It's a National Museum, you expect a huge lot of national history. Instead we finished watching the museum less than an hour, it was a bit shocking.

“Everything Finnish”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2014

It is a small museum as they go, but very well done. It is divided into pre history, 200 BC to 200 AD, 900AD to middle ages, and the recent past. It is not extensive, but requires at least 2 to 3 hours.

“Interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2014 via mobile

The structure itself is worth a visit. Located in a 1902 building near the Töölo bay, it resembles an ancient castle, with statues of bears as a symbol. Inside it you can find various expositions regarding Finnish history and customs, from prehistory to modern times.

I especially enjoyed the Stone Age and Iron Age section, with lots of specimens and objects about everyday life in Finland thousands of years ago, there's even the oldest fishing net ever found, in bits and pieces but still clearly visible.

In addition, a whole section is dedicated to the Finnish people, from clothing to physical traits to genetics. Really interesting.
