Check opening times - certain hours, weekends only. Well worth a visit to see where and how Mannerheim, President and Marshal of Finland lived. Apparently no detail of the interior was too small for him. This remarkable man served in the Czar's army for 30 years until the revolution. He was decorated by both sides in both World Wars. You will come away understanding much more about the history of Finland and its neighbor. Excellent personal tour in English.

“One of the most interesting museums in Helsinki”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

If you are interested in Finnish history, specially regarding the independence, I highly recommend visiting the Mannerheim museum in Kaivopuisto.

Please check visiting times and call ahead to make sure you fit in to one of their tours. The guides are excellent and tours are offered in various languages.

“We were enthralled”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

My 11 year old daughter who usually gets bored on the very principle of visting a museum, was enthralled from the minute she stepped through the entrance. The most amazing tale of a man's lifetime is supported by personal items and props that get more and more bizarre as you move through the rooms. Reading up on Mannerheim's life, e.g. on Wikipedia, is recommended -- also as antidote to the museum guides' almost reverent idolisation.

“The highlight of our trip to Helsinki!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2014

It takes about 20-30 min walk reaching this museum from the Helsinki center, I believe a few minutes only by tram (we were walking there). This is a very quiet neigbourhood with embassy offices all around. The white, austere 2-storey house is overlooking the gulf. Museum staff are all great, welcoming, very enthusiastic about Baron Mannerheim. Our guide was a brilliant young lady who spoke perfect English and was a "walking encyclopedia"! Working in the tourism industry myself, I can give her 200 points out of 100, this was the best tour in my life so far :) This museum gives a unique thorough insight into the private life of Mannerheim, of course, covering also his career, travels and legacy. They have done a great job preserving the mansion exactly as it was during his time there. Every object is in it's rightful place. The museum is not to be missed for everyone interested in history. There was a big exhibition devoted to Mannerheim at the Hermitage museum in St Petersburg about 10 years ago. Having seen this exhibition, the Mannerheim Museum in Helsinki was certainly the place to go. I would like to thank the team of the museum for the most wonderful experience!
