“The hotel of deception?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

Next to what was on offer for value, maybe this was the one, the professional pictures made it look like a nice clean hotel. When I arrived I was disencharnted. I know hotels are for just sleeping in, but at night I felt like they had put me in a coffin room!

I was on the 5th floor and the tram could be heard clearly at night, the bed, somewhat confortable wasn't helped by the tiny pillow on it. It was mostly clean, but it looked tatty at the same time. The little room was a yellow and green, a sickly colour scheme. The bathroom had a poxy shower, which was so small it was very hard to work right. There were incect legs and silver fish! Not amazingly clean by any means.

At one point I came back to the hotel to relax for a bit, on one of the days I was there, the maids hadn't even done their job of making the bed! Pathetic if you ask me, the hotel staff didn't seem interested or helpful.

Breakfast was okay when I got use to it, but still, it seemed poor at the same time, the eggs are not that fresh, they arn't cooked properly and just sit there, I tried a little but they tasted horrible. I was getting up early so I could go exploring, that did seem the best time to have breakfast, any later and it was packed, too many people not enough space.

There is a bar area on the other side of the hotel, don't order a coffee there like I did. Just tastes like hot boild mud! I was glad when it came to checking out!

Room Tip: Don't get a single room, best upgrade.

It was ok but rooms and bathroom very small. I would like to have kettle, tee and coffee in my room but nothing like that in the hotel. You had to go down in the lobby to get coffee and that costs. The breakfast is very good in this hotel. Transport to city center is good but this is rather out of all traffic. We had to go to Finlandia Hall and that is a 20 minutes walk from the hotel. You dont walk thrue the park in the dark so we had to take the tram.

All in all I can say it was ok, but just that.
+ possitive parts:
+ It is easy to get to the city center;
+ There is a sauna included into the price on the 8 floor
+ quite full breakfast.
- negative parts:
- very, very, very tiny rooms if you have to spend there more that couple of days you can get Claustrophobia;
- not nice neighbourhood there is no place to walk around unless you want to meet many drunk people;
- though it is easy to get to the center because the hotel is surrounded by the trams, you have to be ready to learn about their noice;
- window opens only for 5 or bit more than 5 cm;
- if you need a smoking room (it is a problem), you will be placed to the 5th floor which itself smels as an astray, more worse there are no balconies only the same 5 cm of opened window, no ourside terrace for smoking.
- Internet is free and only cabel in the room, wifi you have to pay every 24 hours, no free wifi in the loby, there is a computer in the loby you can use it for 20 min.

So saving money it is OK, but don't expect too much.

Room Tip: Maybe room facing the back yard are more quitet, 5 floor for smokers, but it stinks even if you are...

This is one of the cheapest locations in Helsinki, and it is clear why: rooms are basic and small, bathroom is very small. However, for me this was fine as I was there to enjoy the city and not my room. The room was clean, the windows could open (which is getting increasingly rare in hotels, but for me quite important), and the shower was small but provided copious amounts of hot water. Service at the reception was exceptionally helpful, better than some 4 star hotels I stayed in.
Downsides: your fellow guests might have picked this hotel as well because of its cheapness, so you can encounter people that are not your standard hotel guests.
Connection to the centre is very good: the 3B tram stops right in front of the hotel, which is about 10-15 min to the centre. Tram service is reliable and trams go very often. There is indeed not much to do in the direct neighbourhood of the hotel, but the tram connection makes up for this. Make sure that you have small notes however for the tram, they do not accept 50 euro notes.

Stayed for one night. Room was pretty basic and simple with a small bathroom. Breakfast was good, quite basic. Free internet.

OK place for a one night stay but maybe not more than that. Nothing to complain, nothing to praise.

The hotel is very simple but nice, room was ok, but bathroom is really very small. Breakfast was very good, i like the cottage and different kind of bred,cheese, eggs etc, never been hungry. Dinner at the restaurant downstairs was nice but expencive. Staff is friendly . I like the location, its not so far from center of the city if to take tram-it take 5 min, and about 20-25 min by walking if the weather is fine)) Hotel area is a bit quiet, but we found some nice bars not far from hotel. And its not far from Aquarium, we went there about 15 min, walking in the park. I can say that staying at Cumulus was good for the money we paid for it.

Stayed here three days for work. Paying €130 a night, so not so budget. Dont know if this is the best rate, maybe for Helsinki its typical. My previous two visits were also in medium quality hotels.

The rooms are aka the Travel lodge chain in the UK. Small bathroom, with a quite a plastic shower. Clean, but toilet basin had a sort of brown, no bleach colour.

Good is the provison of free internet- so i can write this review from my room!! ;-) Only cable internet, no free wifi. Why ????

Break fast is poor, the range is ok, but it is crowded, the tables are not cleared quickly after previous customers, the table cloths are left on so that the stains and crubs from the previous person remain. if they don't want to replace the cloths each time, why not at least paper covers or place mats that can be replaced or hard surface that can be kept clean ???? Its a false economy. Maybe not sufficient staff in the breakfast lounge

In my view this is the key factor that makes me not recommend this hotel

+ clean room, near my work location, quiet, ok rooms. free internet

- 20 min walk from down town, braekfast sevice and cleanliness of tables poor, expensive for quality,
