“Nice and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2010

The hotel is ideally located right next to the central railway station, so whether you arrive by train or by bus, it will only take you a couple of minutes to walk there. I arrived at 9:40, long before the check-in time, and expected to have to go for a walk around until 2:00 p.m., but they checked me right in.

My single room on the 10th floor was very spacious, with a big desk, a small table and an armchair, and had a big bathroom. The hotel is in the very centre of Helsinki, so it faces busy streets, but with the soundproof windows, you can hardly hear any noise. The rooms are air-conditioned, but the temperature control can be set to “warm”.

Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant on the 10h floor, and if you are lucky to get a table at the window, you get a skylight view of the city centre. Breakfast is very good and includes a choice of cheeses, cold and hot sausage, some vegetables, scrambled eggs, cereals etc., and even marinated herring (a national dish). The restaurant tends to get really crowded in the last two hours when breakfast is served, so it seems that the right time to come is either very early or very late (in the last half-hour).

The rooms are equipped with a big flat-screen TV with a keyboard, which can also be used to access Internet (the fee is about 8 euros for 24-hour connection), but there is also free Wi-Fi access (pick up a new card with the codes at the reception desk every 24 hours).

If you have to leave later than the check-out time, they will store your luggage until your departure time.

An additional bonus is that you get a 10 per cent discount in the big Sokos department store located in the same building with your hotel card (show the card to the cashier when paying).

The only problem I could spot is the room service. They don’t seem to pay much attention to the cleaning of the floors: I found someone’s hair on my bathroom floor on the day I came, and it seems it was still there when I was leaving three days later. Hope they take better care of this in the future.

Otherwise it is a very nice hotel, with friendly and helpful staff and very conveniently located. I think I will come back there.

Overall a really good place to stay. My only criticism is noise from other guests. My room overlooked the next-door Sokos store, so it was usually quiet. However, the insulation between the rooms and the hallway was insufficient to cater for some inconsiderate other guests who arrived in the early hours of 1 of the 3 mornings, talking loudly and rearranging furniture. The hotel does have a sign posted requesting that guests respect others and be quiet, but better insulation would be more effective.

Considering that this hotel is ranked as a 3 stars, I can say that the service was good, the rooms very confortable and an ok breakfast (not much choice). Clean room with modern and minimalist bathroom. Location is great, just next to the train station and tram stops, really close to everything in the city centre.
Just a little warning, if you are traveling with kids this may not be the best hotel (e.g. no bathtub).

As many other travelers have noted, this hotel has a terrific location. It's directly across the street from the train station, the Finnair bus from the airport stops just across the street, and there's a taxi queue in front of the station. The hotel couldn't be in a better location for getting around. My teen daughter and I stayed here several nights before going to St. Petersburg and one night on return. We had rooms on the outside of the hotel with great views of the street scene and the city at night. Our rooms and baths on both stays were spacious and immaculate. i dealt with a young blond man at the reception desk several times and found him friendly and helpful. There's a computer and printer in the lobby for checking email and printing boarding passes. There are ice machines for those of us who like cold drinks! The carpets in the hallways could be replaced but that's my only negative.

It was great to arrive on the Finnair bus and be able to just cross the street to the hotel. The room was a good size and clean but, as others have noted, there was a nasty smell in the bathroom which no amount of air-freshener could keep at bay for long. Great choice at breakfast. The hotel is just opposite the main train station which is great for travel connections but it isn't the prettiest part of town.. It is within a 10 minute walk of Senate Square and the harbour though.
There's a department store next to the hotel which can be accessed via the lobby but the supermarket in the basement isn't that nice so for picnic supplies etc I walked to the Stockman store (about 5 minutes away) which also houses a liquor store.
The free wifi was really convenient.

This is a great location beside the Central Station and a short walk from the Esplanadi and Market Square for boat trips. The rooms (we stayed twice) were excellent for the price but there were problems with large numbers of guests in this big hotel. Tables were not cleared quickly enough at breakfast and we had to sit at a table and push aside the remains of other people's breakfasts. There were queues for the lifts (elevators) and only three were in use but there seemed to be three others out of use behind the main lifts. The lift controls were unpredictable. You press to go up and it sometimes goes down! We got stuck in a lift for 45 minutes.

This hotel has got to be in the best location for Helsinki. It is right in the middle of everything - airport bus, train station, Stockmanns, Kauppatori, Senate Square, Finland's National Museum, Contemporary Museum, Post. And in the same building, there is the Sokos department store which is very much like Stockmanns, a McDonalds, a coffee house, a bar/restaurant and a supermarket. The City Audio bus does pick ups every morning for hotel guests. There is a good selection of hot and cold food at breakfast and there is a casual atmosphere. The breakfast restaurant also doubles a private hotel restaurant for the guests. There are public and private saunas in the hotel and you would need to make your bookings with reception. Don't forget to ask for your internet logins and password from reception as well.
