“Excellent stay; excellent city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2011

I stayed in the Sokos Vaakuna July 7 - 10, 2011. The hotel room had everything I needed, and a large balcony to boot (I had a 9th floor room). The balcony looked right onto the square, and the train station below. The front desk staff was very helpful; the the hotel's location cannot be beat! The Vaakuna is one of about six Sokos hotels in Helsinki, and this one is the most centrally-located. Also, I had free Wi-Fi in my room.

We booked this hotel based on Tripadvisor Reviews and mainly due to the hotel's location, which is excellent.
We arrived in Helsinki at 6.30 am (via Singapore) and caught the Finnair bus to Central Station (buses depart every 20 minutes to and from the airport).
The Vaakuna hotel is located about 100m from the station and bus drop-off point. Not surprisingly when we arrived at the hotel our room was not available, but we were able to leave our luggage in the hotel's luggage room (at your own risk as the luggage room is not supervised by hotel staff) whilst we went on a walking tour of the city. We got back to the hotel about 1.00 pm and our room was ready. The staff at the hotel reception were friendly and helpful.
Our room, situated on on floor seven, was very clean but basic. The bathroom was small, but functional.
A couple of comments on the room/hotel:
- No in- room safe (notwithstanding the staff at reception telling me their was a safe in the room). You can leave valuables in a safe at the reception desk
- No bedside tables, which was stange.
- Limited hanging space
- Mini-bar - but prices exorbitant
On the positive side:
- Free wi-fi internet - you need to get a pass word from reception
-Tea making facilities in the room
- Iron and ironing board in the room
- Flat screen TV
Our room tariff included breakfast, which was fairly basic.
There is a supermarket on the ground floor of the hotel and also a Macdonalds restaurant. There are plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance.
Overall this is a good tourist class hotel, although it is in need of a good refurbishment in parts of the hotel. If you are not expecting four or five star accommodation, you will not be disappointed.

Sokos has a number of hotels in Helsinki and this is one of the most central, right next to the main train station with Finnair airport bus stop and taxi rank right in front. Overall I recommend this hotel especially to business travellers for its location and convenience but this is not a memorable hotel by any rate. Price is average for central Helsinki.

Decor and room design is like in all Sokos hotels: simple, functional and convenient. I personally don't like Sokos bathrooms because showers do not have enclosure but I guess this is just a Finnish thing. Window didn't open (I think none of them do in this hotel) but airco worked ok. Internet is good and for free. Breakfast area was slightly too small for the number of guests and food selection was weird but this again seems to be common for all Sokos hotels.

For 200 Euros, I expected more from this hotel than a great central location. The check-in was great - fast, friendly and they asked me for room preference, and gave me a high room as I requested. The hotel, rooms and fittings are showing their age. While my room was large, and had a big bathroom, there were some irritants. The bed was creaky and the matress not very comfortable. Every time I rolled over in bed, the headboard banged against the wall. But the pillolws were horrendous - both hard and lumpy at the same time. And while the lack of coffe/tea maker was a minor irritant, the lack of plugs that fitted either the bath or washbasin was not. Also, having only those horrible squeezy containers with liquid soap is not great as you have to get mostly out of the bath to reach up. The breakfast was good.

Location is superb.....Directly across the street from the railway station and bus depot. The carpets in the hallway and room are filthy. If you can get past that, the room is small but does the trick. Quiet and convenient to tram/bus station too. Breakfast was great!

Perhaps the best location in Helsinki right next to the railway station in the heart of the city. There is a department store in the same building as well as some restaurants, and in connecting hallways under the streets you can walk to other shopping malls without even getting out.

The double room was very spacious and comfortable, as well as the bathroom. Sauna is for both men and women at 17 to 21. Some treffic noise was heardable in the morning hours. Breakfast in 10th. floor was good too.
