“Excellent choice in Helsinki”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

Sokos Torni is in a fabulous location in Helsinki, we walked almost everywhere we needed. The rooms are well appointed, very clean and comfortable with free wi-fi. The breakfast was wonderful and fresh with a vast selection from which to choose. The staff were friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay at Sokos Torni if we visit Helsinki again.

Torni is quite centrally located but bit dated hotel. At least some rooms require more maintenance than used to get (especially strange electricity setup which probably was state of the art experiment back in 1970).
Rooms size varies greatly - it looks that the closer you are to the elevator the bigger room you get, but not sure if rule applies to all floors.
Breakfast is just typical for Finnish 4 stars - meaning quite OK if you need to spend there couple of nights and boring when you stay longer.
Overall - good deal if you pay less than 110 Euro per night.

Room Tip: It seems that rooms with numbers x01 - x19 are bigger than x20 - x30 but not sure if this is generic...

Hotel reception reminds me of old world art deco theatre reception- all black and gold. The rooms generally appear to be very modern.Mine was a post stamp sized red and white single- modern and spare with a blood red rectangular hand basin and a loo with a view...through the glass wall of the bathroom ..out the window and over the rooftops of Helsinki! Provided you weren't traveling with a large suitcase it was perfectly comfortable, and from the 7th floor of the tower gave me an outlook, and a window which opened, always a bonus in hotels. The room was warm, appears to have aircon in summer, and being off the main road, reasonably quiet.Reception staff were patient and helpful, breakfast included in my tariff was good, and I enjoyed my stay.Dont forget to go up to the top bar, as the views of Helsinki are great. From the station, walk up to Mannerheimintie, the main road, left to Stockmann dept. store, cross Mannerheimintie and walk up the divided road to the Torni. The hotel can also be accessed via the Forum shopping complex up two floors..ask at information for directions. It's also a short walk to Kampii to get the bus to Porvoo, well worth a visit.

The Sokos Torni was a good place from which to launch into an exploration of Helsinki. It is really well located, near shops, the design area, the railway station and various museums and galleries. It seems that you can walk to most important sights from here. The rooms are a good size, well appointed, clean and tastefully decorated in a typical hotel style.

Being an older style hotel, there are some interesting and quite quirky features that some other reviewers found irritating. However, it is a place with a past and it was a positive for us to see that past acknowledged in the decor and facilities in the hotel. The art works were on the right side of tasteful if a little eclectic.

We found the staff friendly and very helpful.

One disappointment was the lack of any restaurant on a Sunday. In such a cold climate, the necessity to wander around searching for a restaurant on a Sunday night was annoying, as was the irritated and defensive response of the restaurant manager's (?) to our enquiries as to why this was so. It seems the hotel can't (or won't) pay staff Sunday pay rates. When we asked where we might find a restaurant that was open on a Sunday night, this man refused to help by suggesting another eatery. We luckily found Toscanni's at the Klaus K hotel, a few blocks along the street.

On the whole though, a good experience ...... Just pre- plan for Sunday night!

An interesting hotel with historic charm and something a little different to the general offering. In my room there was a hardback book with comments from previous visitors.

Add this to the great location to explore an area of the central zone and you have an eclectic mix.

I have stayed here a few times and in lots of other Helsinki hotels. None beat the history or architecture of this place. It isn't flash or pretentious ; rather solid and decent - like the Finns. Make sure you go up to the top floor of Helsinkis only skyscraper - the american bar.

This hotel has one of the best locations, and the views from the top floors are amazing. The top floor bar is one of a kind. Great restaurant, if you are in to fine dining. Clean rooms and friendly staff, that helps you with everything.
