“Very bad hotel... more like a hostel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013

So, where to start. Let's take the three good/neutral sides at first: 1) Wireless Internet was working OK, 2) Breakfast was OK, not great though and 3) hotel is located near center of Helsinki. Then the bad sides: the rooms were just terrible. Size of about 10 square meters, there was a narrow bed in very old room which probably have earlier been cleaners room. No luxuries except very old, small tv. And these was luxuries which were NOT included in hotel room: air conditioning, sofa, minibar/fridge... not even one free plug for computer so it was like "computer or lights"-choice.

Also rooms were located next to corridor with door, and there was not connecting door inside room, so all noise from there was well wafted into room. Especially in Friday night it meant that without very good sleeping gifts you're going to have a long time trying to get sleep. View from window... well, you could ask what view.

Inside hotel there was no luxuries for hotel guests either except 3 saunas were rentable for guests, but I didn't test them. Old restaurant located with hotel was closed 11 pm (9 pm in Sundays) and was quite expensive so not tempting, either. Location forgives that part, though because inside ~500m you can find lots of places to spend evening.

I've been in better 2-3 star "hotels" in Malta, Las Palmas and even in Sunny Beach. Even 2 which I would consider (and are meant to be student's temporary staying places) hostels had more luxuries than this hotel. Even smallest cabins in cruise beats this hotel room 10-0.

I am very glad I just took one night in this hotel. If you want to travel cheaply, take a hostel. If you want good night sleep, take another hotel nearby. I never thought that in Finland any hotel with this kind of terrible rooms can ever get stars let alone three stars!

Thank you for your feedback. We are awfully sorry to hear that your stay here in our hotel was such a bad experience. It is true, that some of the rooms are very basic and old and they are of course then also the cheapist ones. Our category is three stars cause majority of our rooms are three stars class and we also have brand new jugend rooms which are even better than three stars. If you are reserving the room from some internet channel, we recommend to choose for example comfort room to avoid the oldest rooms.

Also sorry to hear that you were not happy with the prices in our restaurant. We have for example soups, salads, warm sandwiches and pastas from EUR 11 to EUR 13.

We wish you a nice autumn!

Best regards,

I stayed at this property and suited tremendously exploration side of the city. Central and almost next to Central Station. Very good and hearty breakfast, but .... the room gave me unacceptable as too small bath.I was feel that I was in prison.Cold room without any decorating evaluated. Good price for a Helsinki but pity..........

Thank you for your feedback. Our location is definitely perfect. Sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with your room. it is true that our standard rooms are quite small and basic. If you try our jugend rooms or superior rooms you get more space and especially the jugend rooms have really nice furniture also.
Welcome to stay with us again!

When you first enter the hotel it has a really old feel to it, however, our room was great. Very spacious and nicely decorated. Had plasma tv and two reading chairs. Tea making facilities were also available. The bad thing was that the room was on the last floor and the lift only went to the second to last floor, which meant we had to carry our luggage by hand one floor. Staff at reception were friendly. Breakfast was good too.

Thank you very much for your feedback. You were staying in our new jugend rooms which are really nice. It is true, that there are some stairs to walk but it is worth it cause the rooms are the nicest we have.

For those who don't want all the details, here is the short version: This is a rather large style hotel for travelers on a budget that are here for a short stay and will not spend a lot of time in the hotel. If you are a "Four Seasons only" person and travel with your Louis Vuitton luggage, this is not the place for you. But if you are like me and "rough it" occasionally by reserving a relatively clean, and inexpensive place to stay that is easily accessible by a major rail or bus line that is easy to get to from the airport, this is a great buy. This is a bargain hotel and I am sure that when you arrive you will think that if they simply changed the furniture the hotel’s ratings would increase inordinately. Seriously, if the owners of this hotel spent a mere one thousand dollars per room it would make a significant difference.

Getting Here – The Easy Way

Getting to the Hotel Arthur from the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is easy. First, almost everyone speaks English and appears well informed. When you leave the airport you can take the local bus 615 or the Finnair Bus to the Helsinki Central Railway Station. I suggest the latter because the Finnair buses are new buses made by Volvo and have cloth seats which sit high, large luggage racks, and huge windows. The local bus is 4.5 Euro per person, the Finnair bus is 6.30 and the drivers make change. The bus ride is twenty-five minutes and there is not much to see along the way except a lot of birch trees. Take the bus to the last stop. When you exit the bus walk north or straight toward the major street that the bus will be facing. When you get to the major street, do not cross, simply turn left (east) toward the building with the huge “Fox sign” on top, walk two blocks past the huge Finnkino Sign and you will also pass Molly Malone's Bar and the Best Western Hotel which will be across the street. When you get to the corner turn left and the Arthur Hotel is two blocks up on the right.

Getting Here – The Short cut

I.Via Finnair Bus

The Finnair bus ends on the west side of the Helsinki Central Railway Station so when you exit go through the station to the east side and when you exit you will see a huge square with a many bus stops and a huge statue of Alexsis Kivi. Head toward that statute and if you look up you will see the Plaza Hotel on the left and the Casino Helsinki on the right. Take the street that splits these buildings one block. When you get to the corner turn left and the Arthur Hotel is sixty yards on the right

II.Via Local Bus 615

The 615 bus ends on the east side of the Helsinki Central Railway Station so when you exit the bus look to the left and you will see a huge statue of Alexsis Kivi. Head toward that statute and if you look up you will see the Plaza Hotel on the left and the Casino Helsinki on the right. Take the street that splits these buildings one block. When you get to the corner turn left and the Arthur Hotel is sixty yards on the right

The Negatives

The furniture in the lobby and rooms is really dated. The room and shower doors open outward, there is no bathroom vent, no view to speak of and the beds are narrow. The heavy linen is as narrow as the bed which makes no sense. If you prefer soft toilet paper, bring your own. If you need to iron you must do so on the fourth floor. If you have a view of the grade school courtyard across the street and school is in session prepare yourself for screaming children wake-up call at about 8:40 am.

The Positives

There are quite a few positives. The hotel is near major railway, subway, and bus stations. The people at the front desk speak perfect English and are the friendliest people you will ever meet. The hotel is well insulated and the windows open wide if you like fresh air. The bathrooms are brand new and I could swear that my bathroom had a heated floor. The toiletries are minimal but not bad. There is a mini bar, ample closet space, a work desk, free Wi-Fi and a really wide toilet. The WI-Fi was excellent from my seventh floor room and I was able to access my home slingbox and watch NFL games with ease.

The breakfast buffet, which was part of my package, was nice and included eggs, bread, fruit, hot and cold cereal, coffee and different types of juices. This hotel is well located and you can walk to almost all of the major attractions and shopping areas. Again, this is a bargain hotel but for my money, it was a bargain. There is a dollar store on the corner, a sushi restaurant and beauty salon kitty corner from the dollar store and the front desk sells soft drinks.

Here are my suggestions and Tips:

1. When you retire for the day bring soft drinks;
2. Bring your own toilet paper and soap;
3. Spend some time at Stockmann's Department Store (bring the platinum card only) and the Market square;
4. Visit Senate Square, The Helsinki Cathedral, Uspenski Cathedral and the Swedish Theatre; and
5. Have drinks at The Virgin Oil Company, Café Piritta (for picture taking), Molly Malone’s on Sunday night (for free folk music) and get candy from Fetzer;
6. the duty free shopping at the Helsinki Airport is amazing and if you are eligible to gain entrance to the Finnair Club go very early and spend about three hours there before your flight. Trust me, this is one great club;
7. The streets in Helsinki are made of stone so this is no place for old luggage with bad wheels;
8. The streets in Helsinki are made of stone so this is no place for Italian loafers, you need comfortable shoes. You can forget style here, the Finns do not appear to be that fashion conscious; and
9. If you like to have alcohol in your room remember, alcohol is not sold in Finland on Saturday or Sundays so stock up on Friday or you will either have to use the expensive mini-bar or go to a pub and the pubs do not use the “free hand pour technique” they use a regular size shot glass.

Thank you very much for your feedback. This rewiev is actually the whole truth about our hotel; old building, friendly and nice staff and the food also gets very much good feedback. It is true that it would be very nice to have the lobby and some of the rooms refurnished, we hope to get there soon. Welcome to stay with us again!

The hotel in the entrance area is dated and needs a good revamp, the room I had was a exec room a few euro extra and worth it, bed was good but singles.
Bathroom great power shower.
Staff in all areas seemed to want to help and serve the customers with a smile, the reception lady was a great example of how to run a reception...happy smiling face, informative, quick!
The restaurant was very good and when I asked for special diet they adapted the meal to ensure it was good.
It is expensive to eat in Finland but the steaks here is well worth the €'s
Car parking nearby... Mine was free overnight!

Room Tip: Pay the most you can afford to get the better rooms, the lower floors do look a bit tatty

Thank you very much for your feedback. As you said we are an old hotel and some of the premises need to be renovated but as you wrote we have different room categories and the cheapest ones are naturally the oldest ones. Our strenghts are definitely the location and staff. Warmly welcome to stay with us again!

As other reviewers have mentioned this hotel is very close to the main bus and train station. The breakfast room is well appointed and a good selection is available. Very good value for the money (we paid around 83 euros a night). There can be some noise heard from other rooms and some street noise.
