“A great hotel with character in the heart of all the action”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2011

I spent 4 nights in this old harbour warehouse, turned trendy hotel, to kick off my 1-month summer tour of the Nordic and Scandinavian countries. The Grand Marina is a perfect base for sightseeing in the Finnish capital as it is only a 7-15 min by foot to Kauppatori (Market Square and hub for sightseeing cruises on the water), Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki Cathedral, and Esplanadi (shopping, tourist information, Kapelli's Café, pedestrian alley/park). It is also within walking distance of two main Ferry/Cruise ship Terminals - the Viking Line (Tallinn & Stockholm - just 2 mins by foot, across the road and to the left of Grand Marina) and the South Port where you can catch a cruise on the Linda Line (high-speed ferry to Tallinn), St. Peter's Line, or the Silja Line (Stockholm only). The central train station is about a 20 min walk. As for the hotel itself, the rooms (including the bathroom) are of a decent size (although some might think them small - but really rooms in Europe are typically more compact than North American ones) and clean with in- room iron (and even a pant press!), hair-dryer, and wifi (make sure reception gives you the access code). Most of the rooms don't really have a view out onto the water (as the hotel isn't in a really tall building and there are warehouses and other establishments and boats across the street blocking the water) but it wasn't an issue for me. The breakfast buffet is more than generous and is served in the restaurant which is airy and has huge windows that let in a lot of natural light - so very pleasant. There is also a café in the lobby which serves light fare such as sandwiches, salads, and baked goods (okay not so light :)) and a little kiosk (Scandic shop) where you can also get snacks and other knick-knacks (pay at reception). For kids (and "kids at heart") there are also game consoles set up in the lobby with comfortable chairs. Computers (with printers) are also set-up in the lobby, along with a nice sitting area with a TV. The reception staff, while not necessarily "warm," are nonetheless polite and efficient, so no real issues there either. All in all, a great hotel to stay in whether for business or pleasure, as a group, family, or solo. And I must say, you can find some really good deals for this Scandic establishment - I got a room with two single beds for 103 CAD/night. At that price, the Grand Marina seems like a steal in my opinion.

I have just returned from a fantastic 8 night stay at Grand Marina Hotel in Helsinki. I was ever so pleased with the late arrival how patient & considerate the reception staff were. Yes staff will generally be pleasant on first timers like myself.

The hotel layout and area only 10/15 min walk into city centre was the main highlight of staying here. for those who love peace at night can be assured of nothing but quiet at night from say 10pm to 7am.

The stroll along to & from Market Square with surrounding colourfull buildings & landmarks including Town Hall, Catherdral & many little islands made you feel glad to be in Finland. Such a fresh vibrant and not too big a city maybe underestimated at times but this northern capital is certainly not lacking in visitor numbers.

Daily ships from Tallin, Stockholm , St Petersburg & numerous cruise ships all bring many folk to enjoy the city and many tours on offer.

The weather was wonderfull and just the right temperature at 22 to 26 average

I recommend this hotel & will be back soon I hope.

Room Tip: Try booking with Expedia like I did. Make use of the hotels nice sauna rooms, 1st timers should not...

I very much enjoyed my stay at the Scandic. Within easy walking distance of shops and markets, close to the water, quiet. Room was clean, staff was helpful and professional. The breakfast was amazing - several meats, cheeses, cereal options, fresh fruit, etc. The hotel advertises Jamie Oliver as a cooperative for their meals, and his name is on several of their breakfast items. They had vegetarian options, low fat, etc.

My room was on the side nearest the conference center and water/boats, and there was quite a bit of noise each morning, sounded like trucks, maybe delivery or rubbish.

We stayed here a night while passing through Helsinki. The breakfast was fabulous. Most people stay here as it is close to the convention centre and the ferry terminals. The room was small and like many hotels in scandinavia we had 2 beds pushed together rather than a double bed. It was clean well appointed and modern with friendly helpful staff.

Really enjoyed our stay at the Grand Marina and surprised by some of the recent comments on here though it does depend on your room I think every hotel has a couple of bad ones. Location is great just a short walk into the city centre though a bit of a walk with cases to the train station/ bus station. We caught the airport bus into the city and then as it was late took a taxi to the hotel a 5 minute ride and 15 Euro charge.
Reception area spacious and attractive, staff very helpful 4 large lifts so never had long to wait as I have experienced at other large hotels. Had rooms on the 7th floor very attractive and well decorated and most importantly clean. Small window with a larger window higher up but plenty of light, the hotel corridors are dark but more atmospheric than threatning.
Yes there are signs up advising guests to have breakfast before 9 due to the hotel being full when we stayed there was lots of sailors competing in the European Championships based at the Grand Marina. Breakfast was busy every morning we were down but there is a very good choice of food and drink and it is set out over a large area so its busy but not crammed when your choosing what to eat. Breakfast staff were excellent in clearing tables and keeping food and drink stocked up. The main restaurant area is very nice with a nautical theme and plenty of light. Decent shop based at the hotel, free internet access on 2 pc's opposite the shop though quite often same people spending all evening on it. Can get snacks from the bar area and had a delicious cheesecake there one night. Will definetly stay here again.
