“Big hotel with good conference possibilities”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2011

Hotel is spacious and big, with good conference facilities (so if you're looking for a "boutique-experience" forget it and go to Hotel Haven in Helsinki). Easy walking access to market square and city centre (some 15 minutes walk), one tram line (4) passing nearby also. It is "in the harbour", so if getting a boat to Sweden or Estonia - good access to this terminals as well. Hotel is clean and neat, but no special features in the rooms or lobby area. Saunas for men and women (separate) as well as gym (24/7) are a huge plus for the hotel. Free wi-fi, safety box in the room. Full, breakfast - lots of selection in the breakfast (although big hotel - masses also having breakfast at the same time).
Little souvenir shop in the lobby area (where also some international newspapers can be purchased). Staff is nice and OK.

Threre is nothing Grand about the Scandic Grand Marina Hotel. We stayed here June 20, 2011. I asked our tour guide to request a room with one bed for us. The front desk manager told her it would cost an additional 40 Euros, approximately $60 US Dollars for a room with one bed. When I then told him that I would post a review on the internet, he then said maybe he could make an exception and give us a much smaller room with one bed for no extra charge. As the room was already extremely small, I declined. The rooms themselves are very small, dark, dingy, and extremely shabbily furnished with very strange thin mattresses. As soon as we walked into the room, the smell of sewer gas coming from the open drains in the bathroom immediately slapped us in the face. This hotel formerly was a fish cannery, and the smell of fish would have been more appealing. The bathroom was low rent 1950's style. This was the last night of a two week tour to the Baltics and Berlin, and this hotel was by far way inferior than the others and had the worst breakfast. Signs were posted the night before by all the elevators that anyone who wants breakfast better get there by 9am as the hotel was fully booked and probably will run out of food. The breakfast from 7 - 8 am was very meager with very few choices, all unappealing, and the only fruit was watermelon. To be fair, it did have free Wifi in the room, and it was a short walk to the unbelivably, outragiously overpriced restaurants in the town.

Room Tip: There is no best room in this hotel.

Helsinki was the last leg of our Scandinavian tour. Our experience had been fairly good and we were looking forward to spending the last day here before flying back home.

However, last day has proved to be the worst...the hotel air conditioning was not working (not good when temperature is 25 degree). Since it's centrally AC'd, it meant room was stifling hot. This coupled with lack of ventilation meant it was tough - especially for our one year old.

The hotel said they will send fans, but forgot....by the time we called to enquire about them, they had all gone. This would have been OK as it's mechanical problem...but the hotel receptionist was really rude when we asked about the fan....a big contrast to the great service we got every where else in Scandinavia...I am definitely not staying at a Scandic again.

We loved this hotel. It was very clean, rooms were spacious, the staff was very helpful and the breakfast that was included in the room price was fabulous. Another benefit was that it was within walking distance to the open air market, the downtown area and the ferries. We will definitely stay here again on return trips to Helsinki!

I've stayed here countless times on business but this was the first family hotel we had. The Grand Marina is part of the Scandic chain and is formulaic in style but it has all you need.

Close to the harbour and a 15 mins gentle walk to the shops, the Grand Marina is opposite the Viking Line terminal so lots to see.

After a short mix up with the booking, we got our large family room. Situated on the 4th floor in the corner well away from the lifts it was extremely quiet with a large sofa bed, bathroom and kingsize bed (well two doubles put together which suited my wife!)

We had dinner there which has a Jamie Oliver menu aimed at kids which my daughter loved.

As a Scandic loyalty card member I also got some vouchers towards food and drink so saved 24 euros off the bill!

Breakfast was good with plenty of options and we made the most of it!

The only downside was the bathroom which was a little dated in style but totally clean and in good order. It didn't have a bath which we could have used but in actual fact it was fine.

Scandic may be a chain but it feels more homely and we enjoyed our stay.

Although it's a short walk to the Esplanade and the main walking streets, the rooms were nice and the service was very friendly. Free wi-fi and breakfast buffet were nice additions.

I stayed there only for one night in June 2011. I had only 24 hours in Helsinki to see the place, so I spent only a few hours in the hotel, mostly sleeping. The location is good; a 5-minute walk to the market square and to the Suomenlinna ferry. The city centre (railway station and shopping area) is a bit further, but you can also walk, as long as you don't have to carry heavy luggage.
There is free Wi-fi Internet in the room. Breakfast was not bad, but bear in mind that it is a huge hotel; that means that it can be hard to find a nice place to sit in the restaurant, during the peak hours and the food cannot be very tasty. Reception was pretty busy and I had to wait most of the times, when I needed to check-in or out or just to ask something. The people were polite and informative though.
If you are looking for a single room, like me, I think it is a good choice. Decent price and good location. For a double room, you might find something more central or maybe better in th city centre.
