We came here because of Rick Steves' recommendation, which I concluded was sufficiently backed by the TripAdvisor community to warrant making a reservation for our four-day stay in Helsinki, Finland. Because we didn't expect luxury, and knew that Rick Steves' recommendations tend to be more spartan than not, we weren't disappointed. Hotel Anna is extremely well located, in a beautiful portion of the older part of Helsinki, where many of the beautiful old art-nouveau and early 20th century Finnish Secessionist style buildings are found. Both the Design Museum and the Architecture Museum are a block or two away. It is a 15 minute walk to the fastest ferry to Tallinn. It is a 20 minute walk to the train station. There are excellent restaurants all around. So good location, check.
As for the hotel itself, it is plain and functional. Our room was actually fairly large, and certainly comfortable. The only drawback was that the "double bed" consisted of two twin beds pushed together. Not really satisfactory. The room we had was on the 7th floor, which is one flight by stairs up from the top floor reached by elevator. That's not a problem for us, but could be for some people. The bigger problem is, we were right under the roof. In the hot July weather we've been experiencing throughout northern Europe this year, our room was VERY hot. We kept the windows open 24 hours a day, and the fan working. There is no air conditioning.
The bathroom was small, but entirely satisfactory. I am satisfied if the shower works easily, it doesn't flood onto the floor, and the place is clean. Check, check, check.
The breakfast was better than adequate –– not great, not so-so, but solidly OK. The front desk service was friendly, prompt, helpful, and fluent in English. No complaints there. And -- there was strong, reliable and free WiFi. Hallelujah.
So, all in all, I'd give this place three stars for "average," except for the fact it has such a really great location, and the realization that you get what you pay for. On that basis, I give it four stars for "very good." It's a nice place, and I could see us staying here again. But we'd ask for a cooler room next time, and a real double bed!
