“Solid and consistent in good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2009

I stayed at this hotel whenever available during two years plus of regular business trips to Helsinki and it was always a positive experience. The first thing I noticed was their extremely comfortable beds, just what you need after a long day of workshops and then socializing with clients. In this category Royal wins over the otherwise slightly better Torni. Rooms are varying but always good, the suite I got upgraded to was excellent, some standard rooms are clearly better than others. Breakfast is worth a mention, great selection and quality, loved the omelets. The hotel´s old restaurant was quite good and the new Grill It is even better. The location is not right in the center but a short walk from attractions such as Stockmann or the theatre. Only thing disappointing is that it has always been quite difficult to get taxis here in the morning. Supposedly because it is on the wrong side of the city center but the locals have some conspiracy theories...

Stayed at this Hotel for 2 nights,found it VERY average.
Thought the Scandinavians were meant to be incredibly clean,but the bathroom had mould on the ceiling.
Bed was quite comfy but,furnishings were very 70's,a little on the depressing side actually.
Have to say,the buffet breakfast was very,very nice,eveything fresh and well laid out,rye bread was delectable.
My advice is to shop around and check trip advisor when oraganising accomodation in Helsinki.
Im sure there would be better value in Helsinki than Radisson Royal.

Nice hotel. Great location, close to the shopping area and the harbour. The rooms are good, and offers everything you need for a pleasent stay. The fee for using the entertainment screen is on the other and extreemly expensive. 12 euro to watch one film. The wirelss internett is also very slow. The breakfast was very nice.

The Radisson SAS Royal Hotel is very nice and relatively new. The hotel itself was great - clean, new, just as expected. The only down side was that it is somewhat away from the life of Helsinki, on the other side of The Forum (large shopping centre). However, if you want peace and quiet, this might be the way to go. Helsinki is small, and really only takes a few more minutes to walk anywhere. Free WiFi was handy!

  • Liked — New and clean
  • Disliked — A little further from the heart of the city than I had expected

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2008

My wife and I stayed four nights at this hotel in the last week of August in a "business class" room.

Pluses:
1. Very good location across from Kampi bus and metro station and shopping center, with grocery and pharmacy across street;
2. Room recently remodeled with marble bath, wood floors, plenty of lighting, king bed, good shower pressure.
3. Business class room includes unlimited free movies on the TV - although the movies do not change frequently.

Minuses:
1. Cost for a hotel of this class in Helsinki is very high - although rates are lower on weekends and higher on weekdays;
2. Air-conditioning is barely adequate during summer (when outside temperature is 66 degrees F or higher);
3. Room airconditioning and lights shutoff when a room key is removed from the switch near the door - saves energy but leaves the room hot for your return;
4. Buffet breakfast in breakfast room is very crowded if a tour group is having breakfast (the group there when we were there, left the hotel at 10 am - so much less crowded at breakfast after 10 am); buffet breakfast is just fair, with only one kind of sweet roll, scrambled eggs obviously made from mix, and only some varieties of fruit;
5. Hotel has no self-service laundry (apparently some Sokos hotels do have this), laundry prices are extremely high, and the very clean and courteous self-service laundry closest to the hotel is about 10 blocks away (there is a bus from the Kampi area);
6. There is no concierge at this hotel - the reception desk people do give directions, but there often is a line since they are also handling check-ins and check-outs and messages.
7. The clock in the room is on the TV - it can be set to give wakeup calls; - there is no other clock;
8. There are very few channels in English or with English subtitles on the TV;
9. Typical in Europe the tub-shower has a very high wall, so be careful getting in.

Tips:
1. One can easily walk toward the Kampi complex and continue to the main street of town - there the modern art museum, Kiasma, and the two department stores: Sokos and Stockmann are very close and the national art museum is just a little farther; and main railroad station (and metro stop) is just a little farther.
2. Taxi from the airport was very expensive - partly because we came in on a Friday when traffic is heavy in the afternoon as all the office workers leave work at 4 pm;
3. Stockmann, the more deluxe department store, has items on sale for less than Sokos, the less deluxe store, and the service is much better at Stockmann;
4. We found the airport to be very crowded when we were flying out to Copenhaven - allow two hours to check in and go through security, even for a flight within the Nordic countries;
5. The Yellow Line Airport taxi is a shared taxi service one can book in advance - but ours came a few minutes late and then took 45 minutes to get to the airport at 6:30 am since it picked up two other travelers.
6. We took the bus to Porvoo, the town with wooden buildings, an hour away. Although there are a lot of shops selling handcrafts, we found only two that had nice things.

Conclusion:
On a future trip we would probably try another hotel, especially in the summer, hoping for more effective air conditioning, a concierge, and a better breakfast.

The Radisson SAS Royal is very central, I suppose. Had a meeting there in May. The rooms are nicely sized as compared to typical european hotels and the bathrooms are also a bit spacious, comparably.
There certainly is an odd sewer smell throughout the hotel: floor corridoors, main entrance...doesn't permeate one's room, but still, an oddity.
The meeting facilities used were very nice, my colleagues and I grew quickly addicted to the constant flow of coffees conveniently made available to us with the nearby coffee machine.
The catering from the meeting wasn't fabulous, particularly a questionable reception on our first night (allow me to suggest avoiding the "canapes"), though the breakfast spread was nice.
Overall, a slightly above-average stay per room comfort and cleanliness, but not so amazing a tale to tell.
