“Historic hotel in prime location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

The Kämp is a historic luxury hotel right on the Esplanadi, the best location in town. Reception staff were courteous and the room (their standard deluxe double) was spacious, well maintained and comfortable, with an enormous and very comfy bed and a great marble bathroom with a huge bathtub and a separate shower. We found a good deal through Tripadvisor, which offered excellent value.

My main criticisms would relate to the cost of extras and the breakfast. In particular, I do think that wifi should really be available these days free of charge in a 5* hotel, and that guests might appreciate tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms (though these are generally not provided in Finland, where people drink filter coffee). Our package included an ample breakfast, but we would have been disappointed had we paid the standard €29 per head. Breakfast provision was perfectly okay but not exceptional, and on some mornings the breakfast room was very busy and under-staffed so that we had to wait for our tea for up to half an hour while staff rushed around frantically trying (and failing) to top up the buffet and serve customers.

Overall, however, the beautiful hotel itself and the great location compensated for these problems.

We stayed a total of 5 nights on cash and points, and enjoyed our stay overall. The room was spacious and comfortable, with very soft bedding, and the bath and shower were luxurious. The hotel was in a very good location in the heart of many shops, cafes, and restaurants. It was within easy walking distance to the harbor and to the train/bus station.

Service was polite, but not overly friendly or helpful. After arriving from our overnight flight, we practically begged them for an early check in (which we requested in advance by e-mail). The person at the desk did not have a room ready and agreed to e-mail us as soon as a room became available. She never e-mailed us and we were ultimately unable to check in until 3:15 p.m. To be fair to the hotel, regular check-in time was 3:00 and they said they'd been full the night before. Before that, my husband walked up to someone else at the desk, and he breezed away, totally ignoring him, to do something else. This is not an appropriate way to treat people in a 5-star hotel. We were not welcomed to the hotel or greeted when walking by. The front desk area seemed to be insufficiently staffed with two people at prime check-in/check-out times, and they should really have a third person.

The restaurant finishes breakfast service at 10:00 a.m. and apparently closes until it reopens at noon. One day we showed up just after this deadline, at probably 10:05. There were a ton of people still having their breakfast, but we were told that breakfast was concluded and we could order through room service. One day we showed up just before, at 9:55, and found the doors locked, again with a restaurant full of people having breakfast. We knocked and were ignored. I think they should really continue service through 10:30, and that they should have considered accommodating us the day we were just late and not closed earlier than scheduled the other day we attempted to dine there, particularly when there is not even coffee/tea in the room.

Internet was available for an excessive fee, but we were able to get on to a weak free signal and to otherwise rely on our phones. The room was generally clean, but a little dusty on some of the less used surfaces like the glass shelves in the bathroom.

This hotel really seems like the place to stay in Helsinki. So much so that Madonna was apparently staying there before her concert. I don't know how such things work, but the hotel roped off the whole street in front of the hotel and a huge crowd formed around the rope. There was no indication that hotel guests could cross the area or advance notice that the area would be roped off. I don't think it was appropriate for the hotel to block an entire entrance, or to notify the public about its guest (to the extent that is how they became aware of her staying there and formed a crowd).

So if this is the fanciest place in town and host the most dignified guests, you would think they would know how to clean a room... apparently not.

I stayed with a friend. We left for the day only to come back to a room where the bed had been made, the dirty towels taken but not replaced, the dirty glasses left on the desk, the garbage still in the can and the bathroom could have used a little tidying.

We called the front desk and as it was late nothing could be done, the cleaning staff had gone home. In the morning we politely asked for a comp breakfast on account of not having had our room cleaned and the reception granted our request, which was a nice gesture.

The otherwise 29EUR breakfast however was not that great and had I paid for it, I would have been hugely disappointed. Most of the items did not look very appetizing, perhaps they had been sitting there for too long. The dishes were not replaced or tidied frequently enough so the presentation was influencing my appetite.

The staff were nice because they were paid to be nice, not because they wanted to be. The rooms were like any room at any hotel of this caliber, but nothing special. I think overall The Kamp was not what I had imagined it to be. There is no glamour or glory here, just a Sheraton perhaps.

This is a very nice hotel right in the heart of Helsinki. The reception area and all public spaces are luxurious and the room was fantastic. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would certainly recommend it to anyone staying in Helsinki.

Hotel Kamp is in a highly central convenient location, in a beautiful building. The rooms are reminiscent of a dated ritz Carlton, but they have nice amenities including a marble shower, a bath, etc. it's styled in a more traditional style versus the uber modern style which most hotels have. It has a gorgeous spa on the 8th floor, but be sure to book at least a day or two in advance- they tell you they are wide open and then they book up quickly.
I was pleased with the service, and they had free bikes to borrow to explore the local area. It's a short walk th to cathedral, the waterfront, the local market and there is an esplanade park accross the street.

Room Tip: The eighth floor connects to the gym and spa

I visited many times Hotel Kämp. It has always been without a single problem.

The rooms are big, even if you take the first price, with a gigantic bathroom. Everything is perfectly clean (except some rare times a stain on the carpeted floor).

The service is flawless. You can ask almost whatever and they are always friendly.

The food, especially breakfast, is divine. It is always a pleasure to get there in the morning. It is among the very best breakfast I ever experienced. In general, café Kämp is a good address with a very interesting selection of wine.

I also stayed alone with a child of 2 years old and they did the best they could to make it nicely work...

Prices are really reasonable if you get a deal on the Internet. In any case, it is not so expensive considering what you get for the same price (or 20-30€ less).

One drawback? yes, the Wifi Internet (as in many palaces) is not included... which is simply impossible to understand!

Room Tip: If you pick a standard "Deluxe" room (first fee), ask NOT to face the road, more specifica...

Simply the best hotel in Helsinki. Great service, well-appointed rooms, with luxurious bathrooms, large, and most importantly, very quiet. We enjoyed the central location, the bar with fantastic wine selection, and knowledgeable staff. The hotel caters equally well for the well-heeled tourist, and the lucky businessperson/entrepreneur. If there was any negative points, it was probably that we wished we could stay longer.
