“Great start to a vacation!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

Just arrived in Helsinki and were recommended Luomo by our concierge. We were more than pleasantly surprised. We chose the 3-course tasting menu (although you can get 5 and 7 as well). Each course was unique, juxtaposing flavors and ingredients you would not expect to go together. The restaurant also surprised us with multiple "amuse-bouches". The service was attentive although a bit too aloof at times. The ambience was pleasant (view of the water) although not intimate but the food was spectacular. It was a bit pricey but I think that's what we foodies are going to have to pay in Helsinki to eat well!

“What an enjoyable and refined dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

Very good atmosphere, outstanding food and a beautifull location near the Helsinki market place and harbour. Expensive, but the money is very well spent.

“Snotty service; not worth it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

Having visited many other good restaurants in Helsinki and considering that this restaurant has a Michelin star, I expected great food and excellent service. The food was generally good, with many interesting dishes, although some dishes were a bit borderline (including a taster served in a test-tube). The biggest negative about this place is that the service is horrible. None of the waiters smiled and they seemed to be more involved in tasting the wine in their service/bar corner. They were actually quite snotty, which was a terrible turn-off. The service was also inconsistent - I saw several tables presented with a steaming pine-needle "show", yet several tables were left without it, including ours. The cost was a bit high, and I have no problem paying more, but this was simply not worth it. There are many other similar restaurants in town that are excellent. This is not one of them.

“Up there with the very best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

The new wave of Scandinavian cuisine has hit the shores of Finland comparatively recently, but with restaurants like Luomo, Helsinki should now be firmly placed on the gastronome's travel radar.

We had a truly memorable dinner in a relaxed yet intimate setting. The decor is minimalist but warm, in a cool, bright room overlooking Helsinki's market square. The service is smiling and relaxed and the prices very reasonable for what can be an expensive city - especially so when you opt for the wine pairing menu.

The real star of the show, however, is the food. From sensational breads to clever amuse bouches, technical brilliance to deftness of touch, it delivers on every level. A salmon soup starter was stunning in presentation and execution, while my vegetarian wife's 'Potato field' was a whimsical deconstruction of the noble tuber. (As an aside, I noticed another reviewer had said Luomo was 'not for vegetarians', but in our case they were incredibly accommodating.)

Talking of which, my steak main was stellar, but even this committed carnivore would have opted instead for my wife's sensational mushroom risotto. It was unlike any other risotto you can imagine (partly because they used puntalette pasta instead of classic risiotto rice and partly because it is prime mushroom season) but trust me when I say you have to ask for it, even if it is not on the menu.

A milk chocolate, lemon and licorice soup was genius while 'strawberry and milk' a brilliant juxtaposition of textures and flavours.

It may not yet have NOMA's fame, but maybe that's a good thing. So keep it to yourself.

“Lives up to its hype”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013

Luomo was truly a special experience. Helsinki has experienced a boom in high quality restaurants, and we chose Luomo as our special, high-end dinner for this trip. We selected the five-course menu with wine pairings. Each course was beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. I particularly liked the wine pairings--the choices in wine were unorthodox (one course featured a Moroccan red) but each paired perfectly with its corresponding course. You should appreciate some degree of molecular gastronomy if you're looking to try Luomo. They use fresh local ingredients, but are very inventive with preparation (potatoes covered in edible clay, for example). If there was one small flaw, it would be the service. Courses could probably be spaced a little further apart, and the servers are varying levels of friendly. However, for foodies traveling to Helsinki, I highly recommend this restaurant.
