“Rock Church, Helsinki, Finland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

Completed in 1969, Temppeliaukio Kirkko (Rock Church) is an architectural and acoustical grand achievement located in central Oslo. Architects Tomo and Tuomo Suomalainen designed the secular appearing structure with the input from conductor Paavo Bergland and acoustical engineer Mauri Parjo. The fact that the foundation and walls are carved out of granite, it is round and has a concave copper dome have combined to create a superb and unique acoustical experience. The Rock Church hosts Lutheran church sermons and classical musical concerts. It has attracted many of the world's best organists to perform in the venue. Natural light baths the room from 180 vertical window panes which connect the granite walls to the copper dome creating an uplifting yet tranquil ambience. English church serives are given on Sunday at 2 pm. Check the board out front for scheduled concerts and events. Most of the time admission is free but I recommend you attend either a church service or concert to witness the acoustics for yourself.

“Church in the rock with heavenly organ music”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

We arrived in Helsinki on a Cruise ship. We followed Rick Steve's Scandinavia walking tour of Helsinki. We went to this church first as it closed at 1:00. Someone was playing the organ and the acoustics were unbelievable, the music heavenly. The church is build into the side of a rock with a unique design. It was worth a stop. Also the City Hall at Market Square had free internet service.

“So unique.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

The church was outstanding. I've never seen anything like it. My only disappointment was that there wasn't a service/performance going on because I could tell that the acoustics are incredible. Great design and so unique.

Great place to bring visitors from other countries, as it is just another example of the unique design elements of Finland. Worth the visit.

“Interesting Architecture”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

Nice to pop your head into the Rock Church for 5 minutes. The church boasts a wonderful design built into the rock with a large open roof above. The atmosphere was lovely as organ music softly played. Great place for a rest or some quiet time. There are a couple of handy souvenir shops right outside with decent prices.
