Completed in 1969, Temppeliaukio Kirkko (Rock Church) is an architectural and acoustical grand achievement located in central Oslo. Architects Tomo and Tuomo Suomalainen designed the secular appearing structure with the input from conductor Paavo Bergland and acoustical engineer Mauri Parjo. The fact that the foundation and walls are carved out of granite, it is round and has a concave copper dome have combined to create a superb and unique acoustical experience. The Rock Church hosts Lutheran church sermons and classical musical concerts. It has attracted many of the world's best organists to perform in the venue. Natural light baths the room from 180 vertical window panes which connect the granite walls to the copper dome creating an uplifting yet tranquil ambience. English church serives are given on Sunday at 2 pm. Check the board out front for scheduled concerts and events. Most of the time admission is free but I recommend you attend either a church service or concert to witness the acoustics for yourself.
