“Comfortable, friendly, tasty food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2012

Had a short break in the summer : Kalevala was quiet but the service was great. The room was comfortable, the food was very good (and a great surprise, good for vegetarians) and the views all round were beautiful.

The sauna and lake were brilliant - we felt really invigorated. Would go back just for that!

Hotel is situated at close ski trails and lake, about 5km to city/ village. The rooms were basic decoration and equipment. The restaurant was ok, buffet style. There are winter war museum just close the hotel. If you arrive by train or airplane, need to take taxi from Kajaani to Kuhmo. If you are interested at nature there is lot of see (take a bear watch night, might actually see on), in Kuhmo are also some war sights (winter war era).

In lovely position beside beautiful lake. All the staff were friendly and charming. The food wasn't great, but perhaps that's just Finland!

Spent the night in bear hide photographing bears - fascinating but exhausting. Worth it if you have the stamina.

Room Tip: I think most of the rooms have a view of the lake, which is lovely.

We joined an EXODUS winter experience week in this Hotel. The group of 15 of us had the most amazing time there. The hospitality was superb and EXODUS did a great job in getting us all there and back with no hitches.
The winter activities are beyond belief - cross country skiing instruction, snow-shoe safari, Snow mobile safari, ice fishing, husky dog sled safari, ice-pool sauna and loads else.
You have the option on free days of arranging extra activities like swimming down the rapids in dry suits or extra snow mobile safari. All the special clothing and equipment were provided.
The staff are superb and the instructors great fun. We finished the week with Winter Olympics, Kalevala style - crazy golf in the snow, biathlon darts, tandem skiing, sledge pulling and much more.
Health spa facilities are superb, jacuzzi, sauna.
A "special" is the wood fired sauna by the lake and the jump into the ice cold lake water to cool off.
Just for the record, I need gluten free diet and the Hotel were right on the ball, packed lunches included. Vegetarians had no problems either.
I had to mark it down on value for money as the add-on cost of extra activities mount up, all though they are great fun they are not cheap.

Room Tip: They are all good. Take a travel kettle and tea bags.

This hotel was excellent. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

The hotel is warm and cosy, although could do with more communal seating areas. There is a small sofa seating area in reception next to a big fire which is nice. Also a smaller seating area in the restaurant. There is a pool table and Wii that can be used on request.

The hotel has a tourist information area. Drying room and spa treatment area too. Bar is nice, lots to choose from but very expensive. A small library. Internet access is also available in reception.

Rooms are clean, warm, comfortable. Outdoor clothes/equipment can be hired at hotel. There are also many activities which you can book on including snow mobiling, cross country skiing, Nordic Walking. I don't recommend the Ice sculpting as it is very expensive for what it is and little tuition is giving.

Food is very good and lots of it. Breakfast is continental style and dinners were 4 course.

The hotel is about a 30 minute walk from centre of Kuhmo town.

Plastic sledges are available to borrow and there is a area cleared in the woods next to the hotel for sledging. It was great fun. Kick sledges are also available.

There are two small museums nearby too.

Room Tip: Hotel sells a few toiletries if your luggage is delayed.

Booked direct three nights "Brown Bear Adventure" - bed, breakfast, evening meal, airport transfers. Was advised a board with hotel/my name would be displayed at airport. No! Caught transfer taxi just before its departure for 90 minutes journey. Cross-shaped hotel, rooms at rear overlook lake BUT audible noise of extractors from pulic rooms. Rooms VERY HOT (27C) despite a/c which is controlled by Reception. Moved to front section, card entry system (main part of hotel locked at night). Much quieter, no cooler! 1970s-style basic rooms, minibar, very soft bed. Box-style TV, four channels, occasional English. First two-course meal took two hours owing to function. Remote setting, few guests for August.

Having just returned from this hotel I felt I had to write my first ever review. I have use Trip Adviser to help choose my own holidays, so thought it only fair to take the time to try to help others choose theres.
We booked our holiday through Exodus Travel (A wonderful company) The hotel is extremely friendly, the staff speak excellent english and will help in any way they can. Rooms were of a decent size, though like a lot of continental hotels do not have tea making facilities ( We took a travel kettle, coffee and a bottle of Baileys instead of milk) The food was first class. Drinks can be a little more expensive than back home but not exceptionally so ( You're on holiday chill ) As stated above we went with Exodus on an adventure week, this hotel caters for this type of holiday. It is a wilderness hotel, as the name suggests it has nothing close by, so dont expect shops. But for sheer beauty of the surrounding country its hard to beat.'
