“Price / quality more than okay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

+ Cheap accomodation (by Finland standards)
+ Room is large enough for being a hostel room, although the bathroom is quite small
+ Fast and free wireless internet
+ Free parking places
+ Breakfast at Hotel Santa Claus costs only 11 euro per person.

+/- Note that you have to pick up your room keys at Hotel Santa Claus which is about a 10 minutes walk.

We stayed there for one night and it was ok. It is located quite in the center, you can walk to the center in about five minutes. The check-in is in Hotel Santa Claus in the center, that's no problem. The room was nice and clean, we had our own bathroom. We didn't try the kitchen.

This is a very basic facility, with a room of two beds, a bit worn-out but workable bathroom, lots of warm water in the shower, one reading lamp, a chair and nothing else. At arrival you make your bed with the stuff you will find on it, and leaving the hostel you undo the bed and take the sheet to an outside cart. No service, no personnel. We did not use the kitchen, so I cannot comment it. Good free parking space outside.

The location is good at Rovaniemi center, and the hostel in all is OK if you do not wish to have more comfort or do not want to pay the sometimes too high Finnish hotel prices.

In summer months you may find good bargains also in other hotels with breakfast included in the room price, in which case you may wisth to pay few Euros more - this hostel has no breakfast service.

The hostel itself doesn't have a receiption, you need to do the check in at the Hotel Santa Claus which is around 8-10mins walk from the hostel.

The location is great, just 5mins away from the shopping center. And do have parking slot.

The security is good, because you need a key to get in the buliding.

My room is very dirty and smelly. also the soundproof is bad, you can hear people talking and the door closed sound at the time.

We stayed there for 2 nights in February 2013. It was very cold weather, but the room and hostel was very warm. It was clean and also had lots of pans-pots-dishes in the kitchen. The reception was in a nearby Hotel Santa Claus where the staff was very friendly and informative. You could get into the hostel only by using a keycard so there were no random people hanging about :)
Hostel was no smoking inside, which was good and it also had free parking. I reccommend this place! :)

Oh, and most important- it was SUPER CLOSE to the city centre, just 5 min walk to the mall and pubs etc. ;)

We spent one night in Rovaniemi after 10 days of camping, sleeping in trains and in cars, so useless to say, we almost cried with joy at the sight of our beds. We got a private double room for a very reasonable 30€ per person (in comparison, we paid this in Oslo for a dorm). Our bathroom was very modern, neat and clean. A pleasure to have a shower there!
The beds were not the comfiest of them all, but they were nice. And it was good to have some privacy for the same price as a hostel !
the kitchen was small, but the dinner room cosy and warm.
the location was rather central and we were 10min away from a big supermarket , open Sundays till midnight ( YES, they do that in Lapland ! ) .
the only weird thing was the way the hostel was staffless: you accessed it with a key, and there was a box to leave your key on departure ( you check in at Hotel Santa, in the centre). It felt a bit empty, unlike any other hostel.
Overall, we loved it!

Room Tip: Book early, as this is there are very few hostels in town.

First, the good things:
1. It is very well located, a short walk from the town centre, from 2 major shopping centres, the bus stop and the railway station.
2. We stayed in a private room, and it was reasonably spacious - 2 adults, a kid and 2 HUGE suitcases fit in, no problem.
3. Big clean bathroom.
4. The basement has a self catering kitchen and dining room.

The 2 negative points about the hostel are
1. Like most HI hostels, there is a 2 pm check in, and most trains from the capital reach Rovaniemi in the morning or night. The problem is, unlike other hostels, you can't even get in to the hostel and use the rest room and lobby, since it is staff less, and can be entered only by punching in an access code which gets activated at 2 pm on the day of your check in.
We paid for an extra half day to enter the hostel, because the alternative was to stand on freezing streets for 6 hours on a Sunday morning.
2. You have to go to a hotel called Santa Claus to check in, and that truly is a pain. Check in, lug all your baggage to Hotel Rudolf - boring.

But for the money you are paying, the rooms are very good value. Service is nil of course, it is staff less. Your rooms get cleaned only after you check out, and you put your access cards in a mail box, and your linen in a basket near the lift.
