“Great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

We were there are 1 night on Christmas Day. We booked an apartment and we are located at the 1st floor. The room has an in-built sauna. There is small kitchen for you to make your coffee or have a snack. Breakfast is provided and it is good, wide variety. It is near to the most northern Mac. It is a few blocks walk to the bus stop to take a bus to Santa Clause Village. It is quite far from the city area where there are restaurant and tour company to book your adventure in Rovaniemi. But it is still a nice place to stay. By the way, the staff can't understand English that well. On our last day, we wanted to book a taxi at 7:30 but the staff booked it at 7:13, in the end the taxi came when we are having our breakfast and have to ask the taxi driver to go off first as the staff says that the meter is running at 7:13. In the end, we write down the timing that we need the taxi and the second taxi came at the right time.

I stayed in this hotel because of the good reviews on Tripadvisor but have found my experience a little at odds with other reviewers.

I agree it represents great value for a town that is, with all respect, intent on squeezing as much of your tourist pounds out of your pocket! The place is spotless but very basic, I would liken it to a hostel or an Ibis style hotel. It's two stories, with no lift.

The room is big enough, with two 'beds'- wooded plinth with upholstered springs so its a firm sleep. The walls are also very thin and it's was less than pleasurable waking up each morning to screaming kids running up and down the corridor and arguing Russian couples. The bathroom is a hole in the wall, toilet and sink is fine- shower is a nozzle on the wall and a hole in the floor.

Ladies on reception are friendly with good English-been glared at a few times by the housekeeping staff and the manager who don't seem to want to say hello. Whilst I keep a low profile on holiday, I have found the service a little indifferent.

The hotel seem popular with coach parties and breakfast can be frantic interms of finding somewhere to sit and feeling like you are sat in a Wacky Warehouse- breakfast includes eggs, roast potatoes, toast, yoghurt, cake, coffee, juice, herrings and salad! There is also cake and coffee available throughout the day which is a nice touch when you return from trips. No kettle into but you can borrow one from reception

Recommended if you are on a tight budget but if you can spend a little more, I would go somewhere else for a better nights sleep.

Location good, 4 blocks from Lordi Square and McDonalds

Aakenus Hotelli provided us with the last (triple) accommodation in Rovaniemi, when we booked from Australia in the first week of July! The room and bathroom were both quite large, the hotel staff friendly and helpful and it's located in the main street, roughly 4 short blocks from the centre of town.

Stayed at Hotelli Aakenus apartment for 3 nights during Dec 2012 and experience was really average. Value vs price was really not that good as the it is Christmas season and the price was higher than normally.

Apartment was outdated and I thought it was clean until I fetched kids toys under the bed... big mistake.. There was also other small things like toilet seat was fractured, kitchen sink was leaking, shower water temperature was bouncing from warm to cold etc. so the overall quality was really not that good.

Also sound insulation wasn't that good so our sleep wasn't really excellent because of the noise from other apartments.

Quite a good compromise (value vs price) for Finland. We used their flats that are clean, warm and close to the center. Breakfast are nice, as well the dinner (not as a restaurant, but quite cheap and acceptable...so perfect if you are tired and do not want to travel). People at the reception are very nice. So this is quite good for families, couples etc...

My husband and I took our 2 children aged 6 and 8 to Lapland last christmas. Let me just say it was the best thing we have done to date. The experience was magical and our children are still talking about it to this day. The Hotelli Aakenus was where we stayed for 6 nights and it was excellent. As there were 4 of us we required 2 adjoining rooms which the kids loved. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and the daily breakfast never disappointed. The location of the hotel was a short walk into town and just a couple of blocks down was a great shop where you could purchase any winter clothes you needed for cheap prices. The rooms are by no means luxurious however suited our requirements for this time of year as it is quite expensive over xmas.
A definate bucket list trip!!

Dear All,
If ever you plan Rovaniemi please do stay at Aakenus . The owner Aristo is a real sweet chap and tries to help as much as possible . Unfortunately he is only available in first half . Break fast is fair but for vegeteraians the choice is limited. The hotel is comfirtable walking distance from city centre and also walking distance to Arctikum . The rooms are well heated and the bed sheets , towels etc are very neat and clean. The real good thing about this hotel is its cosiness ans family like spirit . If you have any queries about this hotel or rovaniemi pls write.
Rajnish

Room Tip: Do not take road facing rooms . Incase you are travelling family please take the rear apartment but...
