“The Classic Vendace Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

For a first-time diner in Muikkuravintola Sampo, there's one must: you should order Vendace (muikku in Finnish) prepared one way or other. The restaurant has a long history and is well known for easy-going, somewhat bohemian (but clean) atmosphere. Vendace is, should we say, a national food for Savo region. If you don't like fish, you can do as I did the previous time: I ordered a grill dish. The meal was simple and tasty. Service has always been cosy and friendly. This place is sometimes full of guests, so I recommend an advance reservation for a group.

“"World famous" at least in Kuopio”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2012

If you are visiting Kuopio and if you like fried fish then you have to visit this small restaurant situated a few blocks from the market place. Their "paistetut muikut" (fried vendaces) with mashed potatoes are real good, but also their dishes not containing fish are tasty and in a way like home made. Passing this restaurant without knowing what is inside would not make you (as a tourist) to stop and drop in, but inside you will find an athmosphere directly from 1930-ies. Yes, it is a bit worn down, but charmy at the same time. And remember; with "paistetut muikut" you should drink a dark lager.

“Fishy bussiness...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2012

This place is basically traditional finnish boozery, but have got a new life, because of one finnish TV show.

When you get in, you will find cosy but a little worn down restaurant, whit some locals sipping their beer and jukebox playing finnish pop/rock from 70's.

Now sit down. Order beer. Order "Paistetut Muikut". Thats small white fish dipped in rye flours and then fried in butter. You are supposed to eat whole fish. Head, bones and tail. ALL. Served with thick mash, shinig yellow with butter. When food arrives, order "Napanderi". Thats freezer cold vodka to dillute all that butter.

Simple, delicious, comfort food. Basically a cardiovascular suicide attempt.
