“Perfect Hotel in most central location of Gothenburg. Nice value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

I am staying frequently in Gothenburg since many years and have tested many different Hotels. The Avalon is a refreshing change with very nicely equipped rooms, perfect breakfast and the most central location to Shops, Bars & Restaurants. Nothing negative to say, maybe just that the Avalon doesn't have a Spa area, but a nice rooftop pool (only attached to a suite).

We had selected it mostly because it is centrally located and its style is very contemporary; in addition, the rates are reasonable... for Sweden that is! We were warmly received and quickly directed to our room on the 5th floor: it was large, beautifully decorated, the bed was very comfortable and those down comforters were great to cuddle into. Breakfast, included in the rate is scrumptious and abundant.
We explored everything on foot, from museums to dining to shopping is within easy walking distance. Just loved it!

Pros: Great location, quirky design, friendly staff
Cons: Fairly small room, pool for seasonal use only, fairly pricey (that's Sweden though)

Stayed here in the chilly month of March when in Gothenburg for a gig. The hotel sits on the corner of a cobbled square, opposite a central tram stop, next to the river and is a perfect spot to explore all of the city. Whether for walking excursions, shopping, jumping on the tram to visit attractions, or just a generally chilled city break or stopover.
The room we had was a fair size, though there wasn't much of a view except onto a side street.
The pool, which hangs over the top of the property and looks very cool, is seasonal summer-only fare though. Hardly surprising, but stay in the colder months and it's out of use with no indoor pool to compensate.
Staff were chirpy and nice to us all the time, including in the attached bar to the side of the hotel.
There's a lot of good to say about this place, though it's not cheap. I got a decent off-season rate for £130 for the night. That should be a general notice about how pricey Sweden is as a whole really. It was worth the money, but didn't feel "ultra luxury" really, hence the four stars rather than a full house.

I stayed at the Avalon hotel for a month's time period on business. Overall, I liked the look and feel of the hotel, and the location was practically in the "city center" of Gothenburg--both of which are great. Their breakfast selection is really good (good meatballs!). Outside of the wireless, I enjoyed the room--especially the dove bodywash that they provide in the shower ("perfekt"!). Also, the social scene is "ok" during the weekends.

Here are things I did not like about the hotel:
- No gym: Just unacceptable in my book.
- Unstable wireless in rooms/in the hotel: I stayed on the 2nd or 3rd floor of the Avalon and the wireless in my room was spotty and did not really work. After they tested the signal and came to the same conclusion, I had to use an ethernet chord to use the internet, which is UNacceptable for this type of hotel (or any hotel for that matter). In addition, when I used the wireless in the lobby once it did not work there either (?!). When the wireless does work, the hotel has this silly procedure where you have to login with a username and password; so if you are on the go with your laptop sometimes you have to re-login on multiple occassions which is quite annoying.

Along with the wireless, the laundry service is poor. I filled out the laundry form and placed my clothes on the door EARLY in the morning as they instructed and later (very later) that evening I get back and what do I find, my dirty clothes still hanging on the door?! Although the staff offered to do the laundry the same day (or with a faster delivery) for no charge, when I received my items they failed to return a significant amount of my shirts so I had to deal with that.

As a result of these issues, I wanted compensation as a result of these issues and they eventually did compensate me but I had to tussle with them to receive compensation.

All in all, if they were more consistent (e.g., wireless, other services) I would recommend it; but they are not so I cannot recommend it.

Great location, right downtown. There's a lot of attention to the details in the design of both open spaces and rooms. Excellent artwork to decorate the hotel. Neat rooms with beautiful design and good accessories.
Breakfast is included and good - maybe the only negative point would be the relatively low service level in the breakfast area.

Stayed for 1 night. wish it had been longer. Lovely room, very comfortable bed and pillows. Excellent buffet breakfast.
The location is good, lots of coffee shops, bars and restaurants within a few minutes walk.
Didn't have time to try the roof top pool but it looked good.
