This is an old-fashioned museum focusing on amphibian life like fishes, starfishes, sea cucumbers etc. and also old ships and boats.
There's actually not that much to see and my five year old daughter was bored after 30 minutes. They also have a playroom in which you could spend 15 minutes.

Don't get me wrong, it's an avergae museum but don't plan to stay too long. I would say that the best thing with this museum is that the cafeteria has a waffle buffet where you and your children can eat as much waffles as you like :)

“Enough for a couple of hours”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

The aquarium is small with limited displays so do not expect a large aquarium. Nonetheless it was well laid out and exciting for a three year old.
The upper two floors contained a large number of boats (models) as well as plenty of displays. There was a good mixture of information and things to see for both adults and children. On the top floor there were activities and "maritime toys" for kids.

Reasonable cafe. Picnic area on the top floor. Easy to get to with three trams lines to the city centre from outside.

“Very nice aquarium”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

The Maritime Museum of Gothenburg has a nice little Aquarium that is just the right size for a visit with children. Very interesting fishes and corals - beautiful.

The museum part is traditional, concentrating mostly on different ship models that have been in traffic from Gothenburg harbour. Saw an interesting video with people who have worked in the port telling about their work and how it has changed over the years. The museum has also a simulator with which you can experience how it feels to steer a ship to the port. My simulated trip was steered by a little boy who speeded on high gear and almost got the passengers seasick (seriously!). So, the simulation feels real indeed. Hilarious, though.

I would give four stars to the aquarium, but the museum collections could be arranged to suite better a present day visitor.

Sjöfartsmuseet is a must when in town. Perfect daytrip for the family or for the one interested in shipping and seafaring.

“Maritime theme in a maritime city - could it be better?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2010

I really love this museum. In the permanent exhibition you can watch boats and boats and boats and ships. Honestly speaking there are a lot of boats, but they also tell what it is like being on the sea and how they fish and so on and so forth. Since Gothenburg is a city close to the sea they have a lot to show.

They usually also have an interesting exhibition that is not permanent. Once I visited they had an exhibition about tattoos, since the first ones getting tattoos were sailors. Another time they showed stuff from the East Indian Company.

They also have a small exhibition with live sea creatures. This is definitely the children's favourite part.
