I booked an EasyJet Holiday (via Groupon) for my boyfriend and I to stay at this hotel at the end of September 2011 for two nights. I was really nervous after seeing a few negative reviews (especially as we were on a deal rather than booking direct) but I can honestly say it was fantastic!
We arrived early and thought we would try and check in and drop our bags. I was expecting them to say no but the staff could not have been more accomodating and we checked in about 4 hours early! The hotel is easy to find and is literally a minute's walk from the tram and bus terminal. You can walk to the shops in seconds and the harbour is about 5 minutes away.
We had a room at the front of the hotel and it had a juliette balcony overlooking the square, basically over the door to reception. It was a good size as was the wet room. All nicely laid out and modern. I think our room was nicer than the pictures and the wet room was lovely. Cannot fault cleanliness at all either. We slept well. Our room was on the front so I thought we might be disturbed by trams/people but we weren't at all. The TV has a couple of English language channels as well as music channels which was nice. I did not try to use WiFI so cannot comment on that.
We were told the spa was not working but we could use a neighbouring hotel's. The nice girl at reception said it was really good! Unfortunately, we simply did not have time as there is so much to see and do! However, we did try the gym - it is small (I think there was just a treadmill, rower, weights and a powerplate type thing) but adequate. The spa at the hotel was being done up and I peered in and it looked very nice. I am not sure if you are supposed to pay extra as some reviews suggest but certainly we were not asked to.
On the first night, we ate at the hotel. I have to say that my meal was pretty bad - I had the fried pork from the Swedish menu. It was very greasy and the potato rosti was horrid too. I am not especially picky but I actually could not eat it. My boyfriend had meatballs and said they were OK (in fairness, we did agree the mash potato that came with his meal was the best we had ever tasted). I think that is my only complaint about the whole weekend though and I didn't complain to the staff who, to be fair, would probably have got me something else if I had asked.
Breakfast was nice - they had bacon and eggs, cereal, toast, cold meat, fruit etc. On the first day, we were up early and there was plenty of space, but we could not find a table on our second day, as we had slept later. However, if you go down the stairs, there is an overflow restaurant so it isn't really a problem (although again it was not peak season).
Overall, we had an amazing weekend in Gothenburg - highly recommend the Paddan tour! The bus tour was also good. I was not sure if there would be enough to do but there was and I think had we gone in HIgh Season, it would have been even better, as some things were closed or on limited hours so we did not make it. We bought the Gothenburg Pass (please note that it does not get you free rides at the Liseburg - only entry!) and it was good value, especially if you plan before you go. Everything is so clean and everyone is really friendly and helpful (and speaks perfect English!) The trams are great.
I would also recommend getting the Flygbussarna from the airport - so easy! However, if you are going to do this, if you get your Gothenburg pass at the airport and then buy your bus tickets, you get one bus ticket free. We had bought our bus passes online as we wanted to be sure we got them and then go the Go card from the Tourist office but you can just get the tickets in the little shop along with the Go card so it is even better value to do it this way!
Would 100% recommend and would definitely return!
