“from Vikings to current city living”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2014

Never enough time to see everything but fascinating chronological layout with some temporary installations too.some sections only had wording in Swedish which was a shame but the majority was accessible including video loop in Swedish and English. In one section.
Particularly liked the "guess what I am" areas in each section.
Not happy to miss the last floor so check times before you plan out your day.closed at five pm on a weekday.

“Excellent museum focussed on history of the city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2014

Viking ship is a bit pants - much better ones in Oslo! The section on medieval history is only in Swedish, but the later rooms that trace expansion of the city, planning of the walls and canals, role of the city in trade and in Sweden's short-lived imperial ambitions are all in English (and Swedish!) and are very interesting.

“Unimaginative and no info in English”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2014

I took relatives here a couple of times and then stopped doing that. The collections are haphazard, uninteresting and the information in English was poor. Very disappointing.

An interesting guide to the area through the millennia - a great way to spend a morning or afternoon.

“From Vikings to urbanistic studies”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2014

Go:
1) If you are interested why Göteborg reminds a typical dutch city with all its channels and bridges;
2) If you travelling with curious kids - they will be occupied with museum quest and very good playground on the top floor;
3) If you like to explore an old building, that was alternated, extended and ammended during the last 200 years;
4) If you want to see the fragments
of archeologically authentic viking's ship;
5) If you want to know more about swedish emigration to USA;
6) If you interested to know why alcohol consumption in Sweden is limited and when it all was started;
7)If you are interested in sociology, urban studies and history of people.

Not go:
1) If you not a "museum type", because it's the museum;
2) If you are awaiting huge and comperhensive "only vikings" exhibition.4,5 halls are about vikings.
3) If you think that the history is a boring thing, because 30% of museum content is history and it requires attention while reading - otherwise you'd miss the idea.
4) If you don't speak swedish or english - all tags and descriptions are in swedish and 50% are in english. Áudio guides are available on reception but the content is weak and audioguide repeats obvious things you already red. on tags.
5) If you have more than 1,5 of your time to walk this museum

Check museum shop - they have good choice of Göteborg postcards and other city-connected merchandise.
